Immoral Artists

Oct 14, 2017 by sahmosean
Do you think it is endorsing someone's bad decisions to enjoy artwork produced by a morally corrupt person?

Example: Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids is a great show, Bill cosby is a rapist

Am I morally allowed to love that show

I think this is a really interesting question, any thoughts?

Comments

yeah you can defo separate the art from the artist

Interesting concept. I think if it’s something to that extent, then it is immoral. However, if it’s something minor like shoplifting, etc. then I think it’s okay.

I know lots still love the Jeepers Creepers movies despite the director being convicted of molesting a child actor from one of his films.

Thirteen ahh thats an especially interesting one, because the writers and actors probably caused a lot of that enjoyment. So is it fair to boycott THEIR work?

That's tougher than when it's, like, a stand-up comedian. Like Louie CK had some allegations that haven't been substantiated yet. But they are a one man show most of the time, so it's easy to just say "I'm not going to support them." Meanwhile, a movie or tv show is usually very creatively collaborative

I think people need to worry about themselves

Definitely in terms of TV shows and movies, but I don't think I feel the same way about music because music is just so personal while TV shows and movies are a collaboration of ideas and people
