SOME OF MY FAVORITE TED TALKS PART 1

Jul 24, 2018 by noobsmoke13
Hello, I am that nerdy guy that actually watches TED Talks in his free time. So if ya have a spare 10-20 minutes and would like to learn something new or dig into a new perspective you may not have thought about before, I recommend checking these out. I may post more of these in the future. Feel free to link to your favorites as well and discuss these.

CASSIE JAYE: "When you start to humanize your enemy, you may be dehumanized by your community."

This specific TED Talk is very eye-opening to me. I remember hearing talk on the Red Pill documentary, which dives into the Men's Rights movement, and I did not know how to feel about it. Cassie Jaye is a filmmaker who has documented gay rights and women in STEM and various other issues. This feminist went into the MR movement expecting to expose it but instead saw these guys as humans. As someone raised by a single father I have seen custody battles on the male side firsthand.

DARYL DAVIS: "Take the time to sit down and talk with your adversaries. You will learn something, and they will learn something from you. When two enemies are talking, they are not fighting.  It's when the talking ceases that the ground becomes fertile for violence.  So keep the conversation going."

I fully expect this one to be controversial. This is a black jazz musician who actually befriended KKK member and attended their rallies. He openly told them that he disagreed with their views yet he somehow still never made them into monsters. There is also a story of a Klansman who, through a friendship with Davis, turned away from racism. He gave Davis his Klan robes and hood as a symbol of the Klansman giving that way of thought up.

LECRAE: "Hip hop is the language of a generation of men without Fathers."

Lecrae is one of the most recognizable Christian rappers and founded Reach Records, the biggest Christian rap label. In this TED Talk, Lecrae digs into the culture of the ghetto and explains how rap can be a cure, even though it has equal potential to destroy. As a fan of his music, I really enjoyed hearing his perspective on this issue.

AARON STARK: "Love those who you think deserve it the least because they're the ones who need it the most."

In a post-Columbine America, I feel like this is so relevant. Stark paints the picture of the conditions many school shooters are raised in but he also shows that he didn't do it. He could have done it and he didn't due to a small gesture of love. This does not mean that being nice to a possible shooter would stop these tragedies but it does show how some people can be saved.
