I have a lot to say about my expectations for the recently announced HBO Degrassi reboot which I have compiled below into a helpful numbered list, in order of MOST NEEDED to like, it'd be cool.
**warning** I did not watch that garbage Next Class so general disclaimer, if Next Class already did the storyline I want, I don't care. It didn't exist to me.
1. IRRELEVANT BLACK GIRL. This is a character that no show has delivered like Degrassi. If there is not a completely unimportant black character billed as a main character in the intro sequence, I will riot. Obviously, she will have her single one (1) episode moment in the sun and I need it to be very out of pocket, like Hazel Aden being a self-hating Muslim (pictured above) or Chantay Black running the Gossip Column and being the only other black character's cousin.
2. THE DOT. I almost hit SAVE on this blog forgetting about this QUEEN, I can't believe I almost forgot. This reboot will FLOP if this iconicly named diner-esque restaurant near the school is not still prominently featured in the reboot. Where else will the recurring token minority character ask White Female Protagonist for smoothies? Bonus points if we get the return of ABOVE THE DOT or if this set is used for the active shooter scenario {see #4}
3. RETURN OF OLD CHARACTERS AS TEACHERS. This is probably a given but it's an absolute must, and NO, I don't mean Snake. We NEED a Liberty Van Zandt or a Emma Nelson, even maybe Paige since her actress still seems to want this reboot, to be the Empowered Female Role Model who fucks someone's adult love interest a few seasons down the line, a la Caitlyn Ryan (she wasn't a teacher at degrassi but deserves a mention in this blog)
4. a SCHOOL SHOOTING EPISODE. They already did this obviously but I think it's time for them to do it BIGGER. It's very topical and would cause a lot of buzz ooh la la. It would be an easy way to dramatically wipe some minor characters (like Irrelevant Black Girl) off the board.
5. MEDIA IMMERSION. Not sure if this remained a constant in Next Class but it literally will not be Degrassi unless we get scenes of them in the Media Immersion room on their big exercise ball chairs. PLEASE not taught by Snake though I am begging yew.
6. ABORTION EPISODE. Again, this was a CRUCIAL early TNG plotline but with the current political climate I think it's high time someone slutty gets pregnant against her Traditional Immigrant Parents' wishes and has to dramatically hit up Canadian Planned Parenthood.
7. REBRANDING OF SPIRIT SQUAD. Again I'm pretty sure she has a new name already as of Next Class but I digress, she is the Spirit Squad aka Power Squad to me. Some crispy white BITCH will need to stage a tyrannical rise to power of the cheerleading squad alongside her Irrelevant Black Girl lackey, and RENAME the squad in the process. The acting chops of Crispy White Bitch will be a key determining factor of the series's success because we all know her storyline is the one that will turn shockingly CPM when she is assaulted, gets pregnant or gets cancer or something.
8. GAY AND TRANS? I honestly debated leaving this off the list because, well for one, we know they don't have a choice but to do it, and for two, I have little faith in how they will execute it. IDK if Next Class had a girl with blue hair and pronouns but I'll have something ready to treat myself to celebrate my correct predictions when shthey pop onto the screen, I'll tell you that much.
