Ranking AusVivor NonElim Episodes

Jul 29, 2021 by mahogany
imageSO Australian survivor is known for having really long seasons and really long episodes with a high ratio of non-elims. To one who doesn't watch it this sounds like it would be annoying, however for the most part production DELIVERS in these episodes. Ep 6 of the current season made me want to think back and so here is this ranking.

I am going to ONLY include episodes where there was a true bait-and-switch of some hoes going to tribal council, and a subsequent goop and gag of the castaways/audience when in fact nobody went.

Honorable mention: 2016, Peter gets medevac'd and so Kat survives. This one doesn't really count I guess because someone still went home this episode in the form of old gay Peter pulling himself due to constipation. This tribal was still really iconic though as Aganoa thought they were finally going to amputate their broken leg in the form of Kat and laid ALL their cards down on the table at tribal, and after they're informed of the medevac they must return to camp to figure out what to do with the leg that was going to be amputated. This would rank like 5th if it counted in my eyes.

Unranked: All-stars post-merge exile beach episodes, I stopped watching this dumpster fire of a season long before this but this twist seemed really needlessly messy and I think I would have hated it.

14. 2018 Dead man walking. This was a REALLY dumb twist that I don't get why they included it. Similar to a few entries below it only delays the elim of someone who the editors hated anyway (Commando Steve), so there wasn't much tension included by them being spared. The twist itself was also just really inconsequential. Waste of time and felt to me like it gave Grubby too much time to get tired of working with the Good Side, and subsequently flip to ruin the season.

13. 2016 Final 6 reward challenge at tribal. This was super egregious especially because it came immediately after the somewhat lulling early merge FINALLY kicks off with the boots of JL and Brooke. Then instead of voting another person out they go to tribal and play for reward. ?????????

12. All Stars Weird fire making duel twist. This felt really pointless to me like Dead Man Walking because BOTH of the people it spared had very low-vis/negative edits and obviously weren't making it much farther. I wanted to support Phoebe this season but aside from the rampant spoilers, the edit completely ignored her anyway (like even during these eps I feel like), and it was awkward to watch her anyway after her weight gain

11. All Stars Pre-merge exile vote. This only ranks somewhat high because it saved Shonee but this season is awful and that's all I rly have to say. This season likes to do these *TWO* people with the most votes go to exile twists, and I kinda hate them honestly.

10. 2017 Jury removal - this was kinda dumb and boring, not really a goop or gag so I considered not even including it, but I decided to include it just to rank it low because I felt bad for Dr. Tessa.

9. 2019 Kidnap vote, I really don't remember this except for a brief moment when Hannah, one of the underedited contender girls gets her only line of the episodes saying something stank at tribal, and I really fucked with that. Otherwise boring episode in a boring season tbh

8. 2017 Peter mutinies. This was kinda predictable and felt like a botched rig to save AK too late? once the twist was revealed but I remember being kinda happy for gay Peter because the editors hated him and I though he'd probably just go next. But no, in a shocking twist he was just the El edit of this season as a finale loser with absolutely no content the entire season

7. 2019 Exile beach episodes, technically 3 episodes but counting them as one because whatev. Only slightly better than the other non-elim twist of the season because it heavily includes Daisy, a star who just missed the grass. Her LOSING to completely INV Blackie (aka Simon) WAS a gag. Simon then goes immediately afterward though making this twist feel like a huge waste of time but its kinda funny

6. 2018 Exile beach episodes. This is also technically a 3 episode arc but I am counting them all together deal with it. These were really sad because the two people voted out, Tegan 2018 and Anita, were both legends. Seeing them spill all to each other on exile beach was very vindicating but we all knew our mother Anita would lose the challenge, and so I couldn't be that happy with the turn of events, although Tegan was able to return with a VENGEANCE to take out her nemesis Zach (also Paige.) before being swapfucked and not even being saved by another attempted rig in her favor.

5. 2016 Sue Kidnapped, this was very similar to the Peter Mutiny as far as being kinda boring, but in the context of the MOST LEGENDARY POST-SWAP TRIBE in all existence that is Vavau, it's encoded in my memory as a legendary piece of mythology. When Sue is just like "OH!" Even though Phoebe and Kristie couldn't make it through the 2-2 deadlock the next ep anyway, the fact that the possibility was THERE was really exciting.

4. 2017 Ziggy is voted to receive the ultimate reward. This was really randomly legendary because Ziggy had almost no content to this point OTHER than her stank heel-turn listed in the next entry, so the notion that the tribe had such unanimous, unilateral trust in her seemed to really come out of nowhere. I still rank this high though because Ziggy is a STAR and I will always stan her for randomly tanking Anneliese's game for reasons the producers didn't care to show.

3. 2017 Vote out 2 people, but they're actually swapping. "I'M SORRY ANNELIESE, BUT I AM VOTING FOR YOU" is really all I have to say. Ziggy really took the Crystal Cox blueprint of screaming who she was voting for and ran with it, DICTATING the vote to her alliance as she cast her vote, when they were shocked with a second vote at tribal with no time to plan. This was also iconic for a lot of other reasons, including that it saved the star of the season, barrel racer Tara. It was a really welcomed logical progression of the next entry on the list for me.

2. 2016 Double tribal is actually a double swap vote. This episode was really perfect in a lot of ways tbh. Nick Iadanza getting blindsided in a really open-and-shut vote on Vavau was very satisfying. But of course the real MEAT AND POTATOES of this episode comes from Sanaapu. This was probably the closest modern survivor has come to a rock draw since BvW, and the rock draw probably would have happened had JLP not told them hoes nobody was actually going home. The fact that Flick made it out of this episode without even getting voted out really solidified her Game Changer (tm) status. And of course this is the episode where Conner becomes a true martyr and takes the bullet for his tribe, thus starting his incredibly tragic storyline this season. Very memorable and tear-jerking.

And the best one yet...... 1. 2021 CARA SACRIFICES HERSELF... BUT NOT REALLY. A lot of people have been blogging about this the last few days so it might be obvious but I actually think this is one of my favorite survivor episodes..... EVER. This is the episode where George is SOLIDIFIED as a hero, where the editors FINALLY take a stand in demonstrating we should be rooting for this annoying Macedonian politician, hand an idol to his right hand woman Cara allowing for a true blindside at tribal.... only for WAI, former bottom goddess of the tribe who was saved by George in the season premiere, to fall prey to the sweet nothings whispered in her ear by the majority, causing her to FLIP and join the split vote against George and Cara, TELL THEM SHE'S DOING SO "I'm sorry George, I don't think I can do it" !!!!!, and just when you're starting to accept it's actually George's boot ep, CARA STANDS UP, AND PLAYS HER IDOL FOR HIM. My mouth is still agape two days later. I was already crying by the time her torch was snuffed and when they showed her NOT giving final words and instead walking up to an EoE-esque sign I immediately started crying again. I was SO shocked at this woman's selflessness but after all.... she's not only an empath, she's a mum.
