The U.K. (Well EU) rule is not a blanket ban on gay men btw.
It is sex with a man (if a man) or a woman who had sex with a man who had sex with a man in the last twelve months.
So a gay man can give blood if they haven't slept with a man in 12 months.
Also HIV and AIDS are not the same thing.
I am not saying I agree, just stating the actual rules.

Here in Canada gays can only donate blood if they haven't had sex with another man in 5 years
