Costa Rica Fact File
Costa Rica is a small country located in Central America with a population of 15.6 million people. It has two main languages which are Spanish and English which is one of the reasons it attracts so much tourism as well as being environmentally stunning. Another reasons for its high income of tourists is due to the fact it is located in a fairly good area being south of the United States of America.

Costa Rica is often referred to as the birthplace of eco-tourism which is mainly due to the overwhelming support from their Government for it. They currently have 8 biological reserves plus many more protected places to keep its natural beauty. Many of the most popular activities are based around the environment and included horseback riding, hiking mountainous paths in the cloud forests, and guided bird-watching tours. Yet another huge attraction is it’s wide array of animals which include crocodiles, manatees and otters.

Ecotourism first emerged in Costa Rica in the early 1990s and is often seen as a poster boy for it. It helped settle the debates between environmentalists and economists as to whether tourism did more good than harm to the planet. But since the introduction of eco-tourism it has been show to do more good as the damage to the earth has been limited. The reason it was so supported by the Government was because they were keen to protect what was left of their environment after civils wars destroyed many acres of it. It has about 2 million tourists visit every year who bring about 3 billion pounds into the economy.

Costa Rican’s are seen to have a good standard of living due to a high GDP of £6,700, a 95% literacy rate and an average life expectancy of 79. However there are some costs of having to put up with tourism with one of the most notable being that despite the amount of money it brings in it has really damaged the local economy and disrupted how it works.
However overall I fell as if tourism benefits Costa Rica as a country as my fact file has shown that since the introduction of it the general standards of living in the country have gone up.
