straight people would call their significant other "partner" as well as LGBTQ people. The difference in the USA is that when someone says partner they're assumed to be queer, but that's not the case everywhere. I know some friends here in Canada and they say partner as well and their partners are not the same gender either. It's more of a cultural difference if anything.
One of my best friends in college would say "girlfriend" because she didn't want to differentiate herself from hetero couples, but maybe she would say "partner" if that was the norm like it was in AU. In AU they thought "bf/gf" sounded too childlike/juvenile.
