:::::SCENE 1:::::
*August 9, 2017*
Laying on the ground with blood seeping through her shirt, Eden clutches her shoulder from where Chandler stabbed her before taking off in the group’s truck. She looks around and watches as Bruce and Todd stand back to back killing the walking dead.
Across the street, Nate and Zale are fighting off zombies with their knives but are quickly becoming overtaken. Lost in a daze, Eden snaps out of it as she feels hands lifting her up from under her arm.
CHANCE: Eden, can you walk?
Eden looks up at Chance and nods as she fully regains her focus. Chance helps her stand and the two quickly raise their guns and begin firing at the zombies stalking towards them.
CHANCE: There’s a storage unit over there. Unlocked. We can hide in there.
EDEN: Save your bullets. Head over to the unit and I’ll cover you.
Chance starts to advance towards the storage unit as Eden fires at the zombies chasing after him. He makes it to the unit and quickly opens the door before letting out a whistle. Nate, Zale, Bruce, and Todd turn to see Chance signaling them and begin to make their way over.
Moving quickly, the group makes it into the storage unit and shut the door as zombies claw at the metal. In the darkness, Eden backs against the side wall and sinks to the ground. Todd rushes over and looks at her cut.
TODD: Are you bit?
EDEN: No. Chandler stabbed me.
NATE: Then the bitch took off with the truck.
As Todd checks over Eden’s wound, Chance rubs Zale’s back while they watch the storage unit’s door closed. Nate looks on with frustration in his eyes.
NATE: Get your hands off of him.
Nate shoves Chance away from Zale.
ZALE: What the fuck are you doing?
NATE: You’re going to move on just like that?
ZALE: Now is not the time for your bullshit, Nate!
Outside the snarling of the dead grows louder as dents begin to form in the door.
TODD: Everybody, shut up!
Todd looks around and spots a shelf with butcher knives next to other random objects.
TODD: I have an idea.
:::::SCENE 2:::::
Running through the woods, Sage struggles to keep up with Miles. The image of Tessa’s lifeless body in his hands won’t go away. Distracted, he trips and falls flat on his stomach. Miles stops to looks at him.
MILES: Get up!
Sage remains still as the sound of snarling grows louder. Miles rushes over and pulls Sage up.
MILES: Get you ass up! Let’s go!
SAGE: We…we just left her there.
MILES: Sage, now’s not the time. I’m about two seconds from leaving your ass here.
SAGE: She’s going to turn.
Sage’s eyes go wide as he looks at Miles.
SAGE: I have to go back. I have to stop it.
MILES: It’s too late. Don’t you hear that? The dead are coming for us.
SAGE: I can’t let her turn!
At that moment, the two begin to see multiple zombies surrounding them.
MILES: Damnit! Come on!
Miles takes his gun and begins firing at the zombies close by clearing a path to a nearby tree. He grabs Sage by the collar of his shirt and drags him to the tree.
MILES: Climb. Now!
Sage looks at Miles with an empty expression causing Miles to get frustrated.
MILES: You know what, climb the damn tree or not. That’s your problem.
Miles starts to climb the tree leaving Sage motionless and staring at the approaching zombies. Just then gunshots ring out, snapping Sage out of his trance. As zombies fall to the ground in front of him, Sage looks up and sees Miles still climbing. Looking over he sees Barret up in the tree firing at the zombies below.
BARRET: You want to turn into a rotten corpse or something kid?
Sage looks up and sees Miles sitting on a branch looking down at him. He starts to climb the tree and soon is on a branch in between Barret and Miles. The three of them look down as a group of zombies snarl and gather around the tree reaching for them.
:::::SCENE 3:::::
Todd grabs a wrench from a table and turns to face the group.
TODD: We need to distract them.
NATE: How? We’re trapped in here because of him.
Nate glares at Chance who shakes his head in annoyance.
CHANCE: What the fuck is your deal, dude?
NATE: You moving in on my boyfriend.
CHANCE: You don’t own him.
ZALE: Nate, we’re done. You need to accept it and shut it.
NATE: After everything we’ve been through, you’re just going to…
EDEN: Shut up!
Everyone looks at Eden who is standing next to Todd.
EDEN: We don’t have time for your lover’s quarrel.
NATE: Oh fuck you, you weak ass bitch!
TODD: Hey! Back off or I will toss you out there as a human shield. Now, we don’t have much time. If we can get them to come to the left side of the unit, we can open the door and get out of here. Bruce and I will cause the distraction. Zale and Chance, you prepare to take on the dead once the door opens. Eden and Nate, you will go out first and make it to the building next door. There’s a second story that if we can make it so we can get a better view of the situation. For this to work, we all have to do our part and fast. Now, is everyone clear on what we’re doing?
When no one answers Todd chuckles to himself.
TODD: Ok then. Let’s do this.
He tosses a hammer to Bruce and the two begin backing the left side of the metal storage unit. Soon, the sound of the snarling dead moves away from the door and towards the left side. Todd glances over his shoulder at nods at Chance and Zale.
The two slowly open the door, trying to do it as quiet as possible. Beyond the door, a small group of zombies advances towards the unit. Chance and Zale use their knives to put them down as Eden and Nate step out further.
Looking around, the two see a large portion of the dead are clawing at the left side of the storage unit, but another large group heading towards them. Quickly they rush back inside.
EDEN: Close the door!
CHANCE: We’re trying!
Chance and Zale struggle to shut the door, but three zombies make their way inside before it’s finally shut. Eden and Nate take down the zombies, leaving their bodies on the ground.
EDEN: There’s too many of them. We’re trapped.
TODD: Fuck!
Todd takes the wrench and throws it at the large metal door. The loud bang causes the snarls of the dead to rise.
EDEN: Hey! Knock it off!
Todd looks at her a bit taken aback.
EDEN: This is a fucked up situation, but we all need to keep our heads here. Fighting with each other and making more noise is only going to make things worse.
A silence falls over the group as everyone either paces or sits contemplating their dire situation. Eden looks down at the dead zombies while covering her nose and mouth with her shirt. Moments pass as she slowly begins to process her idea.
Eden pulls out her knife and kneels on the group next to one of the bodies. The men watch as she takes the knife and cuts open the zombie’s stomach.
CHANCE: What…are you doing?
EDEN: No one talks until I say so.
She turns to looks up at the men.
EDEN: Got it?
They reluctantly nod their heads and watch as she continues to cut into the body sending a disgusting smell into the air. Chance turns away from the group and begins vomiting in the corner. Nate watches coldly as Zale goes over to comfort him.
Todd kneels down next to Eden with a concerned look.
TODD (whisper): Babe, I know I’m not…
EDEN: Shut it.
Todd puts his hands up in surrender and gets back to standing. They watch as she begins to pull the organs of the zombie out and smear them and the blood over her clothes and face. After a few moments, she stands to face them. Horror fills their eyes as they take in her new look.
EDEN: The dead’s eyes are greyed out. Their brains no longer function as normal. They are attracted to loud noises and clearly sense a living human. But, they don’t attack each other. If all they wanted was something to eat, then they would be eating themselves or other dead. This is a long shot, but right now it’s our only chance at surviving this. By smelling like them and maybe even acting like them…we just might be able to move past them.
After a few moments of stunned silence. Eden rolls her eyes.
EDEN: You can talk now.
NATE: This is so fucking stupid.
CHANCE: I just vomited and you expected me to smear myself in…that!?
BRUCE: She has a point. If the dead can detect a living being based on smell then their blood and organs could camouflage us.
Todd takes in the sight of Eden and considers the idea while Nate laughs to himself.
NATE: This is bullshit. I get exiled for protecting my boyfriend from being hurt and now am in this shithole of a situation where this barista bitch wants to smell like a rotting corpse. Unbelievable.
Eden shakes her head as the sound of the zombies’ snarling grows louder.
EDEN: We don’t have time. Either do it or get eaten. I’m opening the door in 2 minutes, so make your decision now.
She looks at Todd who after a few moments nods and begins to cut open one of the other zombies. Bruce takes out his knife and cuts up the last of the three zombies.
:::::SCENE 4:::::
As the trio of men sits up in the tree with zombies down below desperately struggling to reach them, Miles looks over to Sage - who is stone-faced.
MILES: You alright?
SAGE: Yea. How long do you think we will be stuck here.
BARRET: Could be days. Without water, we’ll be falling into them 70-some hours from now.
Sage looks over at Barret and anger fills his eyes.
SAGE: You.
BARRET: Oh, you recognize me? You might be the first fan I’ve come into contact with…
Barret sees the anger in Sage and stops to process.
BARRET: Ah…you’re not a fan. If this is about that girl…
SAGE: You killed her!
BARRET: I didn’t, it was the boy you killed.
SAGE: He shot Tessa! He killed her!
BARRET: He was shooting at the dead!
SAGE: Bullshit!
Sage pulls out a gun and points it at Barret’s head.
MILES: Hey, knock it off!
SAGE: You’re going to die for what you did.
BARRET: You need to calm your ass, kid. I saved you!
SAGE: Do you think I give a fuck!?
Sage fires the gun and hits Barret in the arm.
BARRET: Fuck!
Barret loses his balance and starts to fall out of the tree but quickly grabs hold of another branch. As he struggles to boost himself back up, Sage points the gun at his back.
MILES: Sage! Look!
Sage faces forward and sees a zombified Tessa stalking towards the tree. He quickly turns somber and tears begin to form in his eyes. Miles watches and looks towards Tessa. He shakes his head in disappointment as he levels the gun towards her. He puts his finger on the trigger, ready to put her out of her zombified state.
BANG!
:::::SCENE 5:::::
Inside the storage unit, the six survivors standing to face the door while covered in zombie organs and blood. Taking a deep breath, Eden looks over to Todd who reaches over to grab her hand. She looks to Chance and gives him a nod, which signals him to raise the door.
Instantly, the zombies begin to pour into the storage unit completely ignoring the group. In amazement, the group looks at each other and watch as the dead move past them. After letting out another deep breath, Eden looks forward and begins to walk causing the others to follow suit.
Slowly the six of them walk among the dead as the stench of rotting flesh clogs up their nostrils. Eden tightly squeezes Todd’s hand as a zombie inches close to her face before continuing on its way.
Zale looks over to Chance, who gives him a slight smile which he returns. Nate watches and slowly begins to realize things with Zale will never be repaired.
After a few minutes, the group successfully makes it back onto the road leading towards Revco. Looking around they see no other signs of the walking dead.
BRUCE: I think we’re in the clear, for now. Amazing idea, Eden.
EDEN: Now we just have to get back to town on foot.
CHANCE: Do you see that?
The group looks towards Revco and in the far distance see a portion of the horde moving towards the town.
ZALE: Has to be that alarm that drew them in.
BRUCE: A horde even that large would be able to take down the walls.
TODD: We need to get back now.
ZALE: Using this disguise might get us in.
EDEN: We just have to move fast and not draw attention to ourselves.
TODD: Then let’s go.
Todd, Bruce, Eden, Zale, and Chance start to head towards Revco as Nate watches. Zale stops and turns to Nate before walking over to him.
NATE: You were the closest thing I’ve ever had to a boyfriend. I made a mistake and I broke your heart. I get that. But you broke mine the minute she came back. You tore mine up when you refused to let me in and have started moving on. If this is goodbye I want you to know that I loved every minute with you.
Zale looks at him and extends his hand.
ZALE: Good luck out there.
Nate looks down at Zale’s hand and gives an annoyed smirk.
NATE: You too.
Nate turns and heads into the woods, leaving Zale to watch him leave. After a few moments, Zale turns towards Revco and beings to follow the group.
:::::SCENE 6:::::
Sage’s stone cold face stares straight ahead as Tessa’s zombified body falls to the ground. He watches as her body remains lifeless. Miles looks over to see Sage with his gun raised after shooting Tessa in the head.
MILES: Sage.
SAGE: It was on me to do it. Not you.
Nearby, Barret climbs onto the branch while panting and clutching his arm.
Down below, a stray dog limps through the woods struggling to avoid the zombies. Miles raises the gun, aims, and fires hitting the dog in the leg.
WHELP!
The dog falls to the ground and whines in pain which causes the zombies nearby to stalk towards it. As the zombies move away from the tree, Miles turns to Sage.
MILES: Let’s go.
SAGE: What?
MILES: Come on, let’s go.
Miles starts to climb down the tree as Sage begins to follow suit.
BARRET: Hey! Let me go with…
MILES: No.
BARRET: Come on I…
MILES: Fuck off.
Miles and Sage make it to the ground and begin making their way deeper into the woods leaving Barret up in the tree letting out a deep sigh.
As the guys make their way further into the woods they stop and look around.
MILES: We have to somehow get to Revco.
SAGE: Your aunt.
MILES: She and you are the only family I have left. I can’t leave her to die.
SAGE: Thank you.
MILES: What? SAGE: Thank you for…letting me tag along.
MILES: Tessa…she meant something to you. It sucks she died and I get it man, it hurts. But she wouldn’t want you to rot away because of her either. When you were knocked out…she never left your side. She stayed with you day and night. She wanted you to live…so…just don’t fuck that up, alright?
Sage chuckles slightly and nods. As he turns his head, light reflects off of the top of a nearby building.
SAGE: What’s that?
Miles and Sage move closer and see a military base that is fenced in. A few zombies loiter around in the enclosed area.
MILES: If that alarm drew in a large horde to the town…
SAGE: Then they're going to need back up. A lot of it.
MILES: I don’t see any living person out here.
SAGE: What are we going to do?
MILES: Work our way over there, get inside and see what supplies we can gather.
SAGE: What if it’s filled with armed people or the dead?
MILES: We can’t head back to Revco with what we have. We’ll die on the spot.
SAGE: Or we could bust in there and be killed on the spot.
MILES: It’s a chance we have to take. Are you in?
Sage considers his answer and looks around at the military base.
SAGE: Tessa…she was a risk taker. She was brave and endured so much even before the outbreak. She wasn’t afraid of death. She was afraid of seeing others hurt and not being able to stop it.
Sage looks to Miles.
SAGE: Let’s do this. For Tessa.
:::::SCENE 7:::::
As Eden, Bruce, Todd, Chance, and Zale stalk closer to Revco they can see the hundreds of zombies filling the streets. From where they are, they can see windows and doors busted down by the dead and hear the screams of those living being bitten.
TODD (whisper): There’s a bunker under the church. Eden and I will go there to see if anyone made it down there. Bruce, check out the government building and try to get up to the roof to get a better view of the horde. Zale and Chance, some of the residents may be trapped in the apartment complex, head over there and check things out.
Zale looks to Todd with a questioning look.
ZALE (whisper): Then what? We just hide out until we rot?
TODD (whisper): We may have to evacuate.
BRUCE (whisper): There are too many residents.
EDEN (whisper): Might not be as many now. I’m sorry but that’s a fact.
CHANCE (whisper): I need to find Zelma. She might be in the bunker.
EDEN (whisper): Go with Todd and I’ll go with Zale.
TODD (whisper): What?
EDEN (whisper): From where we are it looks like a lot, if not all of the buildings are being flooded with the dead. We don’t know the extent of the damage and if there is a chance people are down in the bunker then they could be trapped. Since Chandler stole the only working vehicle here, we have to either wait for the dead out or evacuate. We can’t take them on ourselves. If there are people in the apartments then Zale and I can get them organized.
The group nods in agreement and as Bruce, Zale, and Chance continue forward, Todd pulls Eden close to him.
TODD (whisper): Be careful.
EDEN (whisper): You too.
TODD (whisper): I…I love you, Eden.
EDEN (whisper): I love you too.
The two share a quick kiss before following the others into the overrun town.
:::::SCENE 8:::::
Miles and Sage make their way towards a door that leads inside the military base. With their guns raised, they share a nod and enter. As they enter inside the darken base, the echoes of the snarling dead fill their ears.
MILES (whisper): Let’s be quick.
The two slowly make their way down a hallway and pass by empty cells. Looking around, the light from outside streams through the windows and the snarling grows louder. Reaching the crossroads, the two stop examine the paths.
To the left is a hallway with multiple doors leading to unknown rooms. To the right is a hallway leading towards a single door at the end.
SAGE (whisper): Which way do we go?
MILES (whisper): We could split up?
SAGE (whisper): I don’t know about that.
MILES (whisper): We can cover more ground in less time.
SAGE (whisper): I know but…
Sage lets out a sigh as the two contemplate as to which option is not only the safest but the smartest. The unknowns behind the doors could be supplies, weapons, armed soldiers, walking dead or more deadly obstacles.
Miles takes a deep breath.
MILES: This is what we’ll do.
