Ask Carly: ATL Q&A - S2, E5

Oct 18, 2017 by carlyjordan14
image1. What is your reasoning for having Meredith have a nightmare and Jude helping her?

To be honest, the whole nightmare scene wasn’t in my original outline for the episode. I actually had a completely different outline for the episode, but after thinking it over I realized it didn’t have that mid-season finale feel. In addition, Meredith is the lead character and in the original outline she was hardly in the episode. So, after rewriting the outline I came up with the idea of having the first scene be a nightmare. In a lot of ways it’s a worse case scenario for her. Everyone being dead and she’s left all alone with no real escape. One of the things I haven’t fully gotten to  touch on is Meredith’s grief after losing Jude. It’s such a haunting thing for her because she wasn’t able to protect him. With him showing up in her nightmare it sort of signifies him being her guarding angel.

2. If you were to get into a relationship with any of the characters in real life, who would you pick?

Oh that’s tough but it would either be Todd or Braxton. Todd is a tough guy who is loyal and doesn’t treat his lady like a damsel in distress. Braxton is a sweet guy who can not only protect those he cares about, but also never gives up on true love.

3. What was the reasoning for [X] to be voted out of Revco?

Chandler was voted out due to her actions against Eden back in season 1. Nate was voted out since he essentially helped cover up Chandler’s actions. Tessa was voted out due to her killing Ramon. These may be a bit of a stretch, but the viewers voted and those three did not get 50% or more of the votes. Thus, they had to be voted out. It can be concluded that Revco, at least while under Emmalina’s leadership, is not fond of human on human violence - regardless of reasoning.

4. Who’s death was the hardest to write? Who’s death was pre-planned? Why did you decide to kill off [X]?

I can confirm that Kevin, Tessa and EJ’s deaths were pre-planned and would have happened at some point in the season. Tommy was more of a, “seeing where the story goes” decision as it would have been either him or Sofia. The reason Kevin was killed was it just made sense story-wise and he was simply not a fan favorite. Tessa’s death was probably the hardest to write as I was enjoying her character. However, with her in between Miles and Sage’s friendship it kind of distracted from where I can see those characters going. No not in a romantic way! (Lol). EJ was highly irrelevant and I tried to give him purpose, but it just wasn’t working. For Tommy, I’ll answer that in question 6!

5. What was going through your head writing this chaotic episode? What was your favorite part?

So much! As I said in question 1, the original outline for this episode was completely different and much more watered down. This episode, after rewriting the outline, was much more action filled and a lot of things came about as I was writing it. For example, when Meredith confronted Ofelia, there was originally no key or bunker. As I was writing the scene it just popped in my head and that lead to the plot point of finding the bunker. In addition, as I was writing, Meredith was originally going to go it alone but it made sense that Danielle would join her and that Naomi would somehow be involved. There were a lot of other scenes that ended up like this where I had a general idea, but then expanded to include more key details.

6. Why would Sofia kill her own brother?

Sofia is older than Tommy, but has always been treated as second place when it comes to their father. She wants so badly to be the apple of his eye and the person he turns to when it comes to making power plays. While she loved Tommy, in this new world he was ultimately standing in her way of power - whether he wanted it himself or not. It’s a ruthless move that could come back and bite her (get it? lol)

7. What can we expect from the second half of season 2?

Tons of action and drama! The second half will deal with the horde and the direct aftermath. This horde is huge and heading straight to Revco. This will be a fight that spans over the course of a few episodes.

8. What were the results of the Build Your Apocalypse Team?

Here is the ultimate Among The Living Apocalypse Team!

Leader: Meredith
Brawler: Braxton
Weapons Expert: Chandler
Supply Runner: Zale
Craftsman: Todd
Supplies Organizer: Libby
Doctor/Nurse: Emmalina
Mechanic: Danielle
Chef: Luca

9. Will we be seeing Chandler again, now that she’s left with a stolen truck?

I can’t say at this time, but I can promise that we haven't seen the last of Chandler. Whether that’s this season or a future one.

10. What is “Fear Among The Living?”

Fear Among The Living will be a direct spin-off of Among The Living! It will take place around the same time as ATL, but focus on a different set of survivors. The reason for this is because a lot of people applied for season 2 of ATL and I wasn’t able to use a lot of the characters. This new show offers up an opportunity to not only introduce new characters, but develop stories away from ATL. They will exist in the same universe, but not necessarily in the same location. Applications for it will open up near the end of this current season. And yes, the show will be lead by an ATL character the audience is already familiar with. Any guesses!?

Chandler as the answer to question 10?
Also, a technical question, in ATL universe, who can turn into a zombie? Just a living person bitten by a zombie, or an already dead corpse, which died by other means, and then got bitten by zombies? I'm asking because of your comment about Sophia's actions coming back to "bite" her, so I thought she might get bitten by a zombified Tommy, but I'm not sure if he can turn if he is already dead. carlyjordan14

Ekatherinna No that was just a pun since this is a zombie show lol Tommy is 100% dead and won't be a zombie since she did a head shot. Just like in The Walking Dead, the infection is already inside every human. So, when they die they will reanimate as a zombie - unless taken down with a shot or stab in the brain. If they are bitten then there is a high chance that they will eventually die and turn. However, just like Krista, if someone is bitten in a place that could be removed quickly before the infection spreads then they can survive.

I'm really hoping Chandler is the leader for the spinoff, but then there's this part of me thinking it'll be Barrett since Chandler kinda seems like a more obvious answer... but hoping that voice is just drunk

Oh Barrett was my second thought as well, Falconbait26
lol
TY for clarifying Carly!

I think(answering question 10) it would be a highly liked character or an impacting character (i.e Chandler,Ofelia,Emmalina,Meredith)

I'm ngl but we've already set up Ofelia's family and their zombified corpses I could see an interesting spin-off for FATL which would follow her family up until their deaths along with other survivors.

I have a random feeling that Corey might be the lead in the FATL

IceIceBaby that would be interesting!
