Ask Carly: ATL Q&A - S2, E1

Sep 3, 2017 by carlyjordan14
image1. Will the person in the holding cell die?

I can’t reveal much about the holding cell except for this is part of the Revco system. Imagine complete strangers, who are armed, walking into your home and asking for shelter. That’s basically what is happening here - even through we know who the people asking for shelter are. There’s still that level of uncertainty and so the holding cell could bring out the best or very worst in people.

2. Are the characters from the season 2 bios that we didn’t see this episode on a run with Richard?

Some are, yes. Richard is out on a run with a few of the Revco residents and they will be introduced later in the season. Others who were not introduced and not on a run will also be introduced. The main thing with this first episode was establishing who the main and recurring cast are. That is 24 characters, so adding more in this episode would have been a bit much.

3. What factors or influences did you use when creating the personalities for the Banks sisters?

When I write any new character I try to stick to what the application made them be. Some things do get tweaked, but for the most part the adjectives in the application are a big factor in how the character starts out. For the sisters, I based their personalities on the adjectives and their face claim. Usually after the casting is complete I’ll look up photos and videos of the actor to get a better sense of what their style is. Are they good at being sassy or are they the sweet goody goody type? With the sisters they are basically opposites so it made it a bit easier to work with.

4. Which Revco member seems to be the most intriguing to you? Biggest trouble? Most reliable?

I’m interested in them all, but I think the most intriguing is Emmalina. She has this strong personality and I’m interested in seeing how vulnerable she will become, especially with a young hottie keeping her on her toes. The biggest trouble is Luca at the moment, given his very bold personality. He is the type to speak his mind and also work to get what he wants. He is unapologetic and that’s something that could either be endearing or frustrating. At this point its early to say who is the most reliable, but I would say probably Libby given how she interacted with the sisters and her keeping busy with work.

5. Could Trent still be out there?

I think it’s safe to say he is among the living as a dead man walking.

6. Who’s your favorite and least favorite character to write for?

This is a whole new season and I feel like everyone is great to write for at the moment. I love the og characters, but I’m also loving the new blood too. For the old crew, my favorite to write for is Eden now that she’s got a new outlook on life. My least favorite from the old crew is going to be kept to myself! Haha. From the new blood I think my favorite right now is Jessica since she’s so wild and carefree.

7. Did you always plan for Ramon’s prison to also be Krista’s parents house?

Yes! It’s one of those connections I knew would be crazy to make. Honestly, the whole Ramon storyline came about as I was writing the episode. I had not previously thought about it, but I needed to give Miles and Sage something to do for 8 episodes. So when I was doing the storyline, I realized that Krista was going to be going to the suburbs to her parents home. That’s when I made the connection and now it’s something that will lead to more interesting stuff once the two groups meet up in Revco.

8. How did you decide what buildings and businesses would be in Revco?

Going in I knew this community needed to have that super small town feel to it, since it just started a few months back. Once I established who that cast was I started thinking what would be in this town and what would be needed. The Ferrari’s would obviously need a restaurant. The medical characters would need a clinic and some type of pharmacy. As the season goes on you will see other places within the small town.

9. Was there a reason you chose not to cast Ofelia’s family?

When I posted the applications I wasn’t expecting to get so many great characters. It was honestly a hard decision to narrow it down to the ones selected. When I thought of Ofelia I knew she would be an important character and I have ideas for her. At the same time, with her family I didn’t see a strong need for them this particular season. Will they be brought into the show at some point? Possibly, but for now I think Ofelia is the type of character who can stand on her own. So many of the characters have familiar ties, which is great, but it sometimes limits them. As with Kevin, he was always going to be Stacey’s little brother. Now that Stacey is gone, he is forced to find who he is and hopefully get to the point where Ofelia and other characters are now in terms of their mindset.

10. Will [X] be brought onto the show?

My hope is to add more characters who were not initially casted later on, but I can’t give a timetable for when. My goal for this show is to make it one where you connect and fall in love with characters you personally did not create. I want you to be able to read the whole episode even if a particular character is not involved. Luckily I see that happening and it’s exciting to see. Characters like Reina, Eden, Miles, Tessa and Todd were not created by Tengaged users and a lot of you have come to love them. That’s exciting for me as a write as it doesn’t limit me to catering to certain characters.

11. Why Angel Judith?

Angel was the name voted on most for Reina to name her baby. For Judith, I thought it would be a nice remembrance of Jude - since he was one of the fan favorites last season who died. It kind of symbolizes life in that when someone dies, another is born. Although Jude is gone, his name and memory will live on through Angel.

12. Where exactly does Among The Living take place?

When I was planning the show I wasn’t sure exactly where I wanted the setting to be. America? Europe? Australia? Somewhere hot? Somewhere cold? There were so many region specific things that I decided to keep it ambiguous. This allows for a variety or different climates and circumstances to take place. It also allows the reader to picture a world of their own.

13. Any plans for a first casualty?

Last season I went into is pretty open minded in terms of who would kick the bucket. It allowed me to develop the characters without knowing they would be dead by season’s end. However, since it was the first season I already had an idea of who would be valuable moving forward. This season I honestly love so many characters and where I think they could go. Because of that, I decided to make a list of all the characters who will die this season. This is a set in stone list to hopefully prevent me from being too afraid to kill off characters I grow to love over the season. So while I don’t have specific plans on the first death, I do have a list of characters who will no longer be among the living come season’s end.

14. Who’s story are you ready to develop more from season 1?

Kevin. I feel like even though he is one of the more hated characters that he has potential to change things around. I want to see how he does moving forward and if he can establish himself as more than Stacey’s kid brother.
