“We should be safe here,” Penny mutters as she sits down beside a tall twisted tree with long green glowing leaves.
Millet and Batik sit down on the soft ground beside her. The 3 youngest tributes having run into each other shortly after the bloodbath, deciding to stick together since no one under the age of 15 has ever won the Hunger Games. Sticking together gave them at least some kind of hope to live past this game, to go back home and see their families.
“why you think the arena is so dark?” Batik asks.
“Could be just something new, maybe the night is safe but when day comes the arena is really dangerous?” Penny says.
Batik looks at her, nervous upon hearing her response. He was scared even going into the games, he was never one to fight, that was his brother. His brother would protect him, would fight anyone back in District 8 if they messed with Batik. But here, in the games, his brother isn't here.
“Well we should get some sleep then before day comes,” Millet says as he lays down on the soft ground.
“That is smart, I'll take the first watch,” Penny says.
Batik looks at Penny, unsure whether to go to sleep and trust her or to stay awake. Penny gives Batik a slight smile and nod, as if she knew what he was thinking. In a weird way it made Batik a little less nervous and he slowly eased onto the soft ground, closing his eyes.
“She is still out there,” Zebadiah says as he walks threw the forest, leading the alliance, “Her face wasn't in the sky”
“Yes but we can look for her in the morning,” Ripper says.
“No we can't! What if it was Terrance out there?” Zebadiah says.
Ripper stops, the death of her partner flashing before her eyes. They weren't overly close in District 12, they went to school together. But after being reaped they grew closer, despite their escorts advice.
Zebadiah sees the look on Ripper's face, “I'm sorry. It's just she is young, she makes a easy target for someone.”
“It's fine,” Ripper replies.
“But she is right,” Thuckle says, “We do need to take a break, we have been looking for hours and it being night does not help much.”
Thuckle and Ripper look fora place to rest well Zebadiah scans the area, looking for any signs that Penny has been threw the area.
Penny struggles to keep her eyes open as she watches the area. At first the fear of something coming running out to attack her was enough to keep her up but now that it has been close to a hour since Batik and Millet fell asleep and the risk of an attack becomes less likely, the droziness kicks in. She shakes her head looking back at the woods when she sees it.
A dog like mutt, it's eyes a milky white with eight thin legs instead of four. It's mouth is wide, taking up most of its face with 2 rows of long razor sharp teeth. The leathered like skin of the creature bouncing back the neon lights of the plants.
Penny snatches a long stick beside her, ready to fight when she sees the first mutt pounce on Millet.
“Millet!” Penny screams as she goes to swing her stick but the creature bites into Millet's neck, with one quick yank it rips Millet's head clean off.
BOOM!
Batik shakes awake from the cannon, seeing two of the creatures beside him when he opens his eyes.
“AAA!” Batik screams as he backs up.
Penny helps Batik to his feet and the two stand side by side as dozens of the creatures stand looking at them. They watch Millet and Penny, letting out deep low growls before suddenly walking back into the woods.
“Millet!” Batik screams as he rushes to Millet's headless body.
Penny stands looking around, shocked that the mutts just left.
Latrix sits in a tree nearby Penny and Batik, watching closely, studying. She purposely tried to get a low training score and refused to talk during interviews in order to get low popularity and scores. People who got drastically low scores were ignored in most of the games, people thought there was no point in wasting energy on them since they are so bad that either the arena or the gamemakers would just finish them off once they got boring. It was a tactic that was working.
Latrix processes what happened quickly before she realizes it. The mutts only attack when you fall asleep, if you stay awake then you are safe, but go to sleep and they will come for you.
She looks around, knowing that likely there is so many mutts in the arena that every tributes is probably being followed by mutts that are ready to attack once they close their eyes.
“Noo!” Latrix hears Penny scream and she looks back.
Penny is thrown to the ground as Cresta grips her trident. Batik struggles to free himself as Galus holds him down, the careers having found Penny and Batik.
Batik screams for help as he looks at Penny, and with a quick swing of Cresta, the trident plunges into his chest.
Batik coughs up jumbled words as blood pours from his mouth, his one arm moving in every direction as if he is trying to point to something but his arm isn't listening.
BOOM!
Penny cries as she sees Batik get stabbed, knowing she is next. She tries to free herself from Hermaya's grip as Cresta rips the trident from Batik's body, turning to Penny.
“Please no! Don't!” Penny pleads.
Cresta smiles as she lifts her trident over Penny.
Penny thrashes around when she suddenly smashes her elbow into Hermaya's face, knocking Hermaya off her balance and loosening her grip. With a quick yank Penny is free. She bolts into the woods, hearing the sounds of the careers behind her.
Zebadiah looks up at the sky, hearing the two cannons fire.
“Must be some late hunters,” Ripper says as her and Thuckle lay down on the ground, ready to go to sleep, Zebadiah taking the first watch.
