I really miss Sears

Jan 9, 2021 by Washed_Ravioli
There was a Sears that I would always go to before Covid.

It was a seemingly ordinary Sears, as you may expect, but to me it was far from ordinary.

Every weekend, I would attend this Sears found at a nearby mall nearly every weekend and we would ride the escalator upstairs to the mattress section. This section likewise held an abundantly thriving treasure trove of clearance items in one's purview.

Every weekend without fail, I could find a large, broken, rocking chair in the vicinity of the section. I would sit in that chair, and I would rock. Back and forth, back and forth. The store was almost always empty save for the every so infrequently working employees who would pass by now and again. The store was clearly on its last legs, but I was holding it up sturdily and carefully with my presence.

I received word sometime in February that the store would be closing by May... obviously heartbroken and devastatingly shattered I took the news in stride and did what I could to contain my emotions. I returned to that Sears not long after and found that the recliner I had come to love so dearly had suddenly been snatched away in my absence by some greedy shopper looking for an cheap sale. I had actually been wanting to purchase that chair for myself, as even in its broken form it had come to mean a lot to me.

I departed from the store that day with a newfound aura of misery surrounding me.

Before I could ever go back to that safe haven and enjoy what little time it had left on this Earth, Covid-19 struck and I was forced into my home with the rest of society, and I never once got the chance to return before it shuttered its doors for good.

I often sit and wonder what happened to my chair and where it may be right at this time. I tremble at the thought that perhaps it has since been broken down and stripped for parts by the owner, as it was already in disrepair when it was purchased.

I can only hope that whomever paid for the ownership of such a lovely chair took the time and expense to refurbish and repair the piece, and they somewhere out there the buyer is sitting and rocking in the chair as I once did myself.
