J - I wasn’t even sure if we were going to count this at first but Noah said it was fine but… Well you’ll see in his review. I love the song this is based off of, What’s Up? is a pretty fantastic one hit wonder and is also a very memeable song so I get why this exists. I’m not sure this was the best choice though, I understand what you were going for but just in the context of a song contest the original probably would have worked better. I do find the meme funny though!
N - … Sweetie when I fucking said Shower Kareoke I didn’t mean what we all sound like in the fuckin’ shower baby! I literally just sat at my computer screen and questioned what the hell I just listened to. Do I give you props for creativity? Sure. #LaCroix - Culture Club - Karma Chameleon
J - This song is a lot of fun! I don’t have a ton of thoughts on this as it’s a pretty basic pop song but goddammit this puts a smile on my face every single time I hear it! Boy George sells the array of emotions on display pretty well, and that harmonica is some of the best harmonica I’ve heard in a pop song before. Good stuff!
N - Hahahaha, I never thought this would be anyone’s pick for shower karaoke but I’m here for it. This song gets stuck in my head for WEEKS so I’m probably gonna be reaching into your DMs and wanting to scream “Karma, karma, karma, karma, karma chameleon” at you… but I do enjoy some Karma Chameleon.
#JayElVeeIsBack: Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Zephyr Song
J - This has always been my least favorite RHCP song, I just never really got it. Listening to it here though, something clicked and I think I finally got this song! I wouldn’t call it my favorite from them, or anywhere near, but I’m not gonna say I don’t care for it either.
N - This is an RHCP I’ve never heard of… but it definitely fits the theme I feel! I’m always indifferent with them, like, while I like their music, I don’t see myself ever queuing any of it up on Spotify… however… this one is a Spotify Save for me this week! Good work!
#FromAWindow: MisterWives - Muse
J - It's fine, I don't really have thoughts on it one way or another after multiple listens. Doesn't offend the senses, doesn't stand out all that much.
N - So a good friend of mine is a huge, huge Misterwives fan so I’ve heard this song plenty…but it’s not my favorite. It’s okay, in my opinion, but nothing I’d queue up for my shower playlist personally!
#Tryphena: Ken Hirai - My Grandfather's Clock
J - I mean… It sounds pretty, and he's got a good voice! Of all the international submissions we've received so far, this is indeed one of them. This didn’t really do much for me, even after looking up the lyrics this song gets not much more than a disinterested shrug. Sorry!
N - So I’ve never heard this song and my “judge a book by it’s cover” was saying “Tanya’s gonna give me a whole ass Japanese disco party in her shower with the disco ball shower head”... girl I was obviously wrong… and now I can’t get the image of you performing this out of my head. We’ve seen some interesting international submissions already this season, but this is one of those that I’m gonna have to sit and ponder tonight. I’m not a fan of these slower songs, as you’ve seen this season… so this was risky in my opinion. Will it pay off?
#Hunty: Aly & AJ - Potential Break Up Song
J - Oh hell yeah, THIS is something I can absolutely see myself wanting to shout along with in the shower, in the car, etc. This has the perfect blend of the angsty lyrical content with fun sounding music that you just want to jump around to. It's going on my playlist!
N - Who DOESN’T jam to a good breakup song in shower karaoke!? I’m here for this choice! While I’m not the biggest Aly & AJ fan, I definitely agree with your pick this week and can’t say it’s a bad song for the round. Good work, Hunty!
#Bigbrotherlover7: The Killers - Mr. Brightside
J - I mean… Duh. It's Mr. Brightside by The Killers. This song was obviously going to be submitted at some point, everyone knows it and everyone loves it, including myself. The paranoia, the fact that it's never made clear whether this situation actually happened or not… I especially love that one lyric in particular, where Brandon Flowers is losing his mind envisioning the whole cheating event and as it bursts into the chorus. A certain body part that rhymes with "sick" is replaced by the much more palatable "chest" as the thoughts finally overwhelm him. Jealousy, indeed.
N - Now – full disclaimer, when you sent me your shortlist for this week… I was like “hmm, let’s see where he goes with this”, and knowing how Julian hates Halsey.. You made the best choice for yourself here. Mr. Brightside IS on my shower playlist.. I’m not sure how you knew that, but I haven’t seen you disappoint with your picks this season. Keep it up!
#BrianGonzalez: Eve ft. Gwen Stefani - Let Me Blow Ya Mind
J - God yes, inject this DIRECTLY into my veins. I could live in those G Funk riffs. Is this G Funk? Probably not but it's very comparable in sound and atmosphere. Unlike Noah I can absolutely see this working in the shower, this is a song you can really THROW yourself into!
N - Alright Brian I SEE YOU! You definitely blew my mind with a this pick this week. Gwen and Eve deliver here, in my opinion, but I can’t really determine if I’d call this a shower karaoke choice in my collection. I’m going to have to sit on this one as well for the night and see what I think, but I do like this song!
#Mrkkkkyle: The Chainsmokers ft. Coldplay - Something Just Like This
J - I made my stance on The Chainsmokers pretty clear early on, but I have to say this is genuinely their best song. Of course, I expect no less from Coldplay, they do seem to have the ability to elevate lesser artists and the same can be said here. Chris Martin sounds amazing as usual, the drop actually works for once, and the guitar that pops in on the last drop is just MAGIC.
N - I was waiting for a Coldplay song to pop up this week! Something Just Like This was NOT what I was expecting here for this week’s theme, but I get it Kyle! I love the collab with The Chainsmokers here, and I think it’s what makes the song perfect for both groups. Good work this week!
#Buttercup13: Miley Cyrus - Party In The USA
J - I can not listen to this song the same after the last season of Masked Singer (If you know, you know.) However I will admit I have a deep love and respect for pretty much every period of Miley’s career, even the most questionable stuff, and this is no exception. This is just a straight up bop which I’ve always enjoyed!
N - This is a song I DID expect to see here this week. Party in the USA is a classic for every basic bitch in the shower let’s be real. When it was first released, not gonna lie, I always memed the hell out of this song because I couldn’t stand it, but honestly, it’s mellowed for me since then and I don’t mind it as much as I did in high school (whew, I’m old). Was it a safe pick for the week? Sure. But it doesn’t land you in the bottom, in my opinion.
#Brightongal: Kate Nash - Foundations
J - Of all the songs that were submitted this week, this is one of them. This reminded me a lot of a far less cynical Lily Allen, and lowkey I spent most of the runtime wishing I was listening to Lily Allen instead because I love her. I’m not saying this is bad at all, I can absolutely see why someone would jam out to this and why this would be a karaoke staple of yours! I’m just not entirely sure this is for me.
N - I’ve never heard this.. But when you said it’s your Karaoke AND shower playlist.. I was like “oh what in the YMCA by the Village am I getting into here”, but no, again I’m wrong this week, and I can actually see you going out one night at some empty bar on karaoke night jamming to this, Jess…not in the shower, but normal karaoke. It’s not bad, but it’s one of those that probably won’t stand out this week for me.
#Smuguy2012: Carly Rae Jepsen - Cut To The Feeling
J - So first I just want to clarify that Noah got through his reviews before I did this round. Wtf Carly Rae is NOT a guilty pleasure because she is genuinely great and nobody should have to experience guilt while listening to this critical darling’s wonderful pop music! People SLEEP on this girl because some people think Call Me Maybe is really bad and didn’t bother giving her a second chance even though that song was great and so is pretty much everything else she’s done.
N - I — Maybe a guilty pleasures week? But yes, it could be a shower karaoke song. I’ve never bothered to dive into Carly Rae’s music since Call Me Maybe, because that song has honestly annoyed me throughout high school to today, however I’m almost digging this one.. Almost. Something about it just doesn’t make me click with it, I’m afraid.
#iindsay: Ariana Grande - 7 Rings
J - I SWEAR I REALLY AM A FAN OF ARIANA, I LIKE A LOT MORE OF HER MUSIC THAN I DISLIKE… Ok now that that’s out of the way, good lord do I ever hate this song! I said a few weeks ago that Ariana’s trap era was pretty bad and this is significantly worse than God Is A Woman in every way imo. Removed from any and all external context and solely as a song, I hate the way this sounds. The Sound Of Music sample is awful, and the lyrics of a white girl flexing a lot of the same signifiers that black artists get shit for (especially the hair line) is gross. Add in the context that she released this, her least self-aware song EVER, immediately after Thank U Next, her big song trying to reclaim the narrative of her life after the disaster of a year she had in 2018, is honestly just appalling. This was QUITE the misstep and, as much as I love Ariana, I can’t say I’m surprised she only hit #1 after this once with a CHARITY SINGLE (being the equally dismal and unaware Stuck With U) because a song like this really is a career killer.
N - When you submitted this song, Julian snapchatted me saying “Oh god, I have to listen to that”, and I knew this wasn’t gonna be a good week for you, girl. I’ve never been anti-Ariana, or anti-this song.. But there could have been so many better picks out there for the theme this week, in my opinion. I’m not a hater of it, but I just know this week isn’t yours.
#Lukesaur: Kylie Minogue - Can’t Get You Out Of My Head
J - So earlier Noah mentioned he’s gonna have Karma Chameleon stuck in his head for a good long while after this round. You know what I’M gonna have stuck in MY head for a while after this round? LA LA LA, LALA LALALA repeated ad nauseum. I have no problem with that because I LOVE THIS SONG and listen to it way too much myself.
N - Another song I expected to see here for Shower Karaoke week! Could definitely imagine any of you singing into your backbrush to this, not just Luke. I’m not opposed… but again, a safe pick in my opinion. I did say Week 1, I find the predictable songs at a disadvantage because I want excitement this season, but I have no complaints about this song.
