Radio Waves - Round 1 Results

Dec 22, 2021 by Thnksfrthmmrs
N ( yswimmer96) - Hi guys, before we start, I do want to thank Julian for bringing me back this season!

I’ll start this season by saying that music is such a broad spectrum… there’s SO many amazing songs, that’s why people keep creating it. That being said, I love discovering new songs. I want to find songs out of this that I replay over and over to the point I’m sick of them by the end of this season… that being said… if there’s a safe and easy pick for a category… in my opinion, skip it, dive deep in those record collections and playlists of yours and find me those hidden gems.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#JayElVeeIsBack: David Bowie - Moonage Daydream
J - Alright, we’re starting this season off strong with some Bowie! I’ve always had a deep appreciation for David Bowie, he was an auteur of his craft and always went above and beyond to make some of the best damn music. The whole Ziggy Stardust album was pretty great, and this song is no exception to that. Everything sounds so slick and Bowie is really SELLING this song, I can close my eyes and imagine his journey through space and it feels wonderful.

N - David’s a classic, and honestly, when I say “if it’s too safe of a pick, skip it”, this is EXACTLY the type of music I was looking for. It’s not the instant free space I, or most people, would think of, but I do agree with Julian here, I went on a ride with this song. Great job!

#Hunty: Astrid S - Hits Different
J - We’re off to Norway for this next one! I’m not familiar with Astrid S but this grabbed me right away and did not let go. There’s something about the vibe this song lays out that I found to be really captivating. Normally I really hate choppy vocals but it kinda works to this song’s benefit, combine those with those very otherworldly synths or whatever those are and it combines to a very unique experience which I am excited to return to in my own time!

N - My familiarity with Astrid stems from some weird Spotify suggestions one day in my Release Radar. Honestly, I’m all for giving unfamiliar artists a try, but this song… just didn’t do it for me? Like when I listen to this I think of doing like Rainbow Road on Mario Kart… in slowmo?

#Buttercup13: Maddie Zahm - Blind Spot
J - Going into a slower one now! The lyrical content is something I’ve been feeling a lot this year, and the beat and melody are both very pretty. I should like this, but there’s just something about her voice… She sounds pretty good on the verses but the chorus leaves me with a bit to be desired. I think her voice is gonna be an acquired taste. I'll probably grow to like this one but my initial impression is this is pretty good but with just 1 thing holding it back from being great.

N - This is my first listen ever, and honestly, it hits. I relate to this whole song. It’s decent. I agree with Julian that something about her voice makes me think this is a song that could easily be forgotten though, like, by the end of this round. It’s like a friend you meet at summer camp, you enjoy it temporarily and then ask yourself “what was their name again?” by Christmas.

#Booyahhayoob: Linkin Park - In The End & Smash Mouth - All Star (Mashup)
J - I’m not entirely sure how to feel on this one. Either of these songs by themselves would have probably been a slam dunk but this just felt weird. Remixes/Mashups are always a weird choice for these games and this one in particular doesn’t have a ton of chemistry. At the time I’m writing this less than half of the submissions are in and I think I need to sit on this one a bit so I guess the rankings will be a bit more telling of where this will land. This did remind me of the far superior mashup of Numb (LP) and Into You (Ariana Grande) though so thank you for that.

N - No. I fold here. These are two classic songs I enjoy on my long drives… and when I realized “wait it’s… both?”, it’s just… I think there’s a website somewhere called the Magic Piano or Magic iPod where you can do this to songs yourself… and genuinely, I think this took away from two great answers in future rounds you could have done this on. I’m just NOT a fan of remixy collabs like this, but I love both songs, so you have me torn here.

#iindsay: Ariana Grande - God Is A Woman
J - Ok so… I am a feminist (#GirlPower!) and I love Ariana Grande, and I’m not religious so this song does not offend me in the slightest. This SHOULD work for me. However, I just don’t enjoy this as a song. Just because a song is about a topic I fully support doesn’t make it a good song automatically. Ariana is not good at trap music and this is just one example of many, she’s never made a good trap song, she needs to stick to pop.

N - Now this is a song I expected here, it’s known, it’s good, and it stands out. Like Julian, I’ve never really cared about Ari offending anyone with the lyrics. Like Julian, I do think Ari needs to stick to her roots, it’s like Taylor Swift diving in the genres that she shouldn’t have for me, but like I mentioned, I did expect this here. It’s a very safe pick for round 1, but it does pull its weight for you.

#Tryphena: Fleet Foxes - Mykonos
J - Between this and the song my solo season’s winner sent in late game, I think I’m slowly becoming a fan of Fleet Foxes! They remind me a lot of what Mumford & Sons were trying to do except without the commercial appeal, which in a weird way actually makes them a bit more appealing to me. This is so peaceful. I love the way it sounds, I love everything about this!

N - When I went to play this, apparently I already had it saved on Spotify, so it’s already atleast good with me. It is one of those laid back songs in my opinion that I could play around the house when I just need to relax, or honestly when I’m just lighting up in my car at night. The perfect song with a great vibe.

#FromAWindow: Allie X - Hello
J - I have heard the name Allie X somewhere but honestly couldn’t tell you where from. This first impression was pretty solid though! My initial thought is that this would slot right into a 2015 hits playlist, and sure enough after a quick google search that is in fact the year it came out. (That is a compliment btw, 2015 was a really good year for pop music!) This definitely sounds like things I have heard before, but very good things I have heard before, I’m definitely into this!

N - When you say “this is my way of saying hi to the competition”..... YOU DID THAT. I do think this song gives you some front-runner status, and it does give me my late high-school/early college era vibes like Julian said (Yes, y’all, I’m old.) That being said I do want to re-emphasize that some good songs can also be like a “okay this is a great pick, but will I remember them by the end of this round?” Yes. This passes. Good job.

#BrianGonzalez: Ayax ft Dollar - Guajiro
J - So, I do not speak this language but the language barrier doesn’t really affect my enjoyment of music, there’s plenty of other elements besides just what they’re saying. The music itself was pretty fantastic, I loved the melody and the swing of it all, I was hooked on that from the start. The guy smoking in the beginning was pretty apt though because his voice was very rough and sounded like the result of smoking a few packs a day. I could listen to that instrumental all day but his voice was something I am not fond of unfortunately. His delivery did sound very passionate though so at least I can tell he is having fun!

N - So, guilty pleasure of mine, I majored in Spanish in undergrad, and my niece and I share a playlist of Spanish songs to just blast on vacation because nobody else in our family speaks it… this is one of those songs. I am not quite a fan of Ayax’s vocals, but his beats are always nice. I do like that you bring a variety to the competition, but I wouldn’t say this is the best starting song to do so. It’s good, but not the best for this round.

#Brightongal: James Arthur - Deja Vu
J - I needed to sit on this one for a bit after my initial listen ngl. Overall I’m gonna agree with Noah about how I enjoy the fact he finally made a more upbeat song instead of his usual ballads. I do have one major problem with this song though: his voice. While this is a song I come in WANTING to like, it sounds like he’s got a nasty case of vocal fry or something going on here. It was nice to see him experimenting with a different/more fun style and I think he came pretty close to pulling it off, if not for his voice taking me out of it. He’s capable of sounding so much better than this, I have no idea why he wanted to sound like this here.

N - I’m a James Arthur fan myself, but this one stands out to me, and I’ve never heard it before! This is the route I wished he would go with his music, it’s less slow than Say You Won’t Let Go, in my opinion, and not too “teenage heartthrob/boybandy” like a Mendes or Bieber song. It’s good, atleast from my perspective, and it’s going to keep you.

#Smuguy2012: Taking Back Sunday - You’re So Last Summer
J - Okay! Taking Back Sunday is a band I’ve only recently started getting into, along with a few of their contemporaries. Despite being an emo kid all through high school and always preferring rock over other genres I kinda missed a lot of the big pop punk bands. This is fairly standard pop punk lyrical content but there’s nothing wrong with that in this instance, you go to pop punk for one or two very specific moods and they’re very reliable in that aspect. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve heard from Taking Back Sunday and this is no exception! Good pick!

N - So when I think of Taking Back Sunday, I think of my former coworkers just JAMMING to them in the parking lot after work. I feel like I never got to have my pop punk/emo phase during that weird middle school/high school days, but I’d be jamming to this if I did. It’s good, and it’s not a song I’d predict to be here, so it fits great for me! Great job!

#Bigbrotherlover7: Goo Goo Dolls - Iris
J - This is such a safe pick but it’s the safe pick for a reason because who doesn’t love this song? There’s not much to say here that hasn’t been said better by other people, it’s just a timeless classic. I almost did this song in karaoke in high school but ultimately passed on it for another song (but in retrospect this was probably a better choice…) Yeah I kinda just don’t have a lot to say, it’s a good song and I love it.

N - God… what a classic. It’s not the first song I’d choose for this, and it’s an easy favorite hands down like Julian says. There’s no “that song is so old/overplayed”, because it’s in every good movie soundtrack, it’s just an overall jam, and you can’t tell me you haven’t jammed out to this with friends at one point in your life. Good work.

#Kiara_xoxo: Karina Grace - Doses
J - Alright, we’ve got a tiktok singer here from the look of things… Interesting! I enjoy the feel of this, it’s very melancholic and reflective. At first I thought she was singing to some guy who wronged her and the lyrics didn’t make sense. But as I kept listening… Damn, she’s singing this to herself isn’t she? Alright, now I’m on board. I, too, am a hot ass mess so stuff like this always has a spot in my library in the more downbeat moments of life. It took a bit of thinking on it but I think I’m into this.

N - It took me a second listen, because when I listened last night, it was just so slow that it did give me the best nine hours of sleep into work this morning. So I gave it a second listen, and I was confused too, but that’s what I LOVE about a pick like this, I love listening to songs where I’m like “wait what did th— OH!?”.  I’m not one for the overly-draggy slow speed of it, but I think it fits for this song because if it were any more uptempo, it wouldn’t work for a song like this… but I can’t lie, it was one of three songs this week I did save on my Spotify once I was listening. ;)

#Lukesaur: Fiona Apple - Limp
J - FUCK. YES. Fiona Apple has been sitting right at the very top of my list of artists I've always wanted to get into but never got around to it, so when I saw this I got very excited. I know a lot of people in my online non-TG circles are huge fans of hers, and she is a big critical darling. This song showed me that yes, they are in fact correct on this one. Fiona is so gifted, I just love everything about this. She’s a fantastic storyteller, this song gripped me from the start and dragged me along for the ride. She’s got the grit and the bite to really sell something like this and convey all her raw and ugly emotions in a way that just left me excited to finally get off my ass and give this woman’s catalogue the deep dive she deserves. More of this please!

N -  Another overly-draggy slow song at first, but for me once it sped up, I was sort of into it. I can’t say it’s a song I’d listen to out of impulse, but again, it’s not a song I’d disagree with listening to. I do have to admit though, the music video caught my attention more than the song itself. Is it going to win this week? Not for me, but it’s not bad.

#Mrkkkkyle: Rüfüs Du Soul - Alive
J - Noah got to this one first and I feel like he hit the nail right on the head with this. This left me wanting more, it feels almost like an unfinished product. One observation I do want to make here, though, is that this spent its entire runtime giving the vibe like it was building up to something a lot grander and instead it just left us with the same vibe from start to finish. I will say that I HAVE seen something similar done well before (that Roses song from last year) but in this instance… Pass.

N - Something about ending this round on this just didn’t sit right with me. At the first listen, I was thinking “okay, opening scene of a movie song”, but now I want the whole movie – I want more, but not because I’m craving the song? It’s good, it has me convinced the movie’s going to be good, but I want more than just the same stuff on loop with an electronic vibe.
