OK SO, I'm certified as an English Teacher, but I'm going for my cross-certification in math (because grading essays is the worst) while simultaneously enrolled in a graduate program (classes overlap). My enrollment officially starts in fall, but I'm taking one math class right now because I can get cross-certified before actually getting my masters.
However, as a non-matriculated student, I had late access to class sign-ups and the class was full, so I talked to the head of the math department (I'm going to call her Dr. Mary Smith for anonymity) and she said it was fine if I showed up to the first day of the class with an override form. So I did this, the prof signed the form, and it was, indeed, fine.
This whole time, I'd been corresponding with Dr. Mary Smith by email, and I set up an appointment to get her to sign my form after the prof did. And she did sign my form - I'm enrolled in the class. BUTTTTTTTT HOLY SHIT DID SHE DRAG ME FOR DIRT???? Apparently one time, ****ONE TIME*** in an email, I'd accidentally called her "Mary" instead of "Dr. Smith" and the first thing she said to me during our meeting was that she was tempted not to sign my form because of it, then went on to rant about how I was so disrespectful, how such behavior would never fly in the professional world (lol).
I've literally been out of school, working with teachers who I'm used to calling by first name, for almost three years. I apologized right away and yet??????? She continued to drag me for *FIFTEEN MINUTES* before FINALLY, FINALLY signing my form.
I'm just so annoyed kldsjfkldsjf god I left so flustered and sad and #shook
danger yeah I mean I get it, I just feel like the appropriate reaction would be "hey do you called me mary once, make sure you call me dr. smith" or something rather than antagonizing me and threatening not to sign my form
WOW that's so weird. I went to a small liberal arts college and I pretty much called all my professors by their first name. I can only think of a couple who went by their last name, but even when I studied abroad in Australia professors went by a first name basis too. I've heard most Masters professors go by a first name basis too, so that's so weird.
I mean, in email I would always say Dr. Smith, but it was an accident! And I don't see how it's that big of a deal. You're not even in an undergrad and you're a working professional! Was she an old lady? LOL. TBH if she ranted about that shit to me, I'd try to find another professor because it shows a lot about her uptight character.
coreyants LMAO yeah same. and she's a old raggedy lady.. or maybe middle-aged, but she looks older. i think that me immediately flushing and apologizing and explaining i'd been working with other teachers for years should've been enough, but alas. and she's not my professor thankfully, just the head of the department
oh thank God she isn't your actual professor LOL. I would have told her in undergrad most professors went by a first name basis too along with what you said, but glad it all worked out at least. You won't have to deal with her again (I hope).
Yeah some professors are VERY touchy when it comes to addressing them; I had one rant about how he refuses to acknowledge any student who didn't refer to him as "Dr. Smith" (not his real name, but you get one I mean). I mean I get it, but some people have to lighten up a little bit especially if it was an honest mistake Teddybear
I also ended up getting targeted by a lecturer because I made that mistake. I had a Chemistry lecturer whose name was...let's say Dr Odd Potato.
On day 1, he gave us a 10 minute slideshow all about his qualifications and past experiences, like he was applying for a job, it was odd.
But we got on at first, so I was joking around like,
"Can I call you Dr Chips? How about Dr Mash? Or Dr Spud?"
And he laughed and was like "Sure!"
Then my friend said, "Why don't you ask if you can call him Mr Potato?"
And I did and then he went on a raaannnttt on how wrong that is.
From that point on, he picked on me. Accused me of talking every class and made me move seat or leave the room every lesson. I couldn't pay attention and I was trying to, so then I gave up, skipped classes and failed it. 馃槕
All in all, both the friend and lecturer were jerks. And I should have known better but had no idea.
omgggg these people smh
im old so this was a long time agooo butttt
i was student teaching and my roommate had to have surgery and so i told her i'd be late ok
so at the hospital they didnt take my roommate exactly at the time promised
her parents were out of state far away so basically i was all she had

and omg did she go off with that U CANT DO THIS IN THE REAL WORLD SHIT HOW UNPROFESSIONAL ETC ETC ON AND ON and altho i took it smh
i was thinking in my head I WOULDA CALLED IN SICK U DIP
That's kinda entitled of her to not realize it was an honest mistake and that you're use to calling teachers by their first name. Annoying, I hate bitches.
