Today is National Suicide Awareness Day, which is a day I feel is often very overlooked. Almost everyone I talked to in person and online had no idea that it was today. To start this blog off, I wanted to show a few statistics I found from the Suicide Awareness Voices of Education website.
Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for 15 to 24 year old Americans. (CDC)
Suicide is the 4th leading cause of death for adults ages 18-65. (CDC)
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US for all ages. (CDC)
Lesbian, gay, and bisexual kids are 3x more likely than straight kids to attempt suicide at some point in their lives.
Lesbian, gay, and bisexual young people who come from families that reject or do not accept them are over 8x more likely to attempt suicide than those whose families accept them.
With these statistics in mind, I just want to remind everyone to think before you post on this website. I know someone may have upset you or done something you didn鈥檛 like, but there is another person behind each account. Bullying, threatening, or harassing other users may not seem like much, but nobody truly knows what people are going through in their personal life on here.
To many, Tengaged is an escape from reality. An escape from a life that may not be treating you all to well right now, and TG might be a good distraction. However, people who intentionally harm others with their words may be causing more damage than they think.
If any of your friends, irl or online, seem too be struggling or seem to be in a sad slump, please reach out and talk to them. If you are a person feeling negative emotions and feelings, please do not bottle them up inside. Please reach out to people you love, or even professionals. There is NO shame in getting professional health and remember you are never alone.
