Advice for College 1st Years

1stAug 31, 2018 by SmoothStalker12
I've wanted to blog this for ages but I've been far too lazy, so here it is!

When I was a freshman in my university, I came into it knowing LITERALLY N O B O D Y on the campus! Fast forward to my senior year, I have so many loving friends, I studied abroad, I am leading a retreat, have a campus job, play on a club sports team and am even on homecoming court this year!!

If a nervous introvert like me can succeed this well, literally ANYONE can. Here is my advice:

1. Have an open mind and be willing to meet people. The first few weeks basically everyone is in the same boat as you, wandering around looking for people to become friends with. You need to say hi to people you sit next to and get to know people you have multiple classes with! My best friends are people who I am in tons of classes with! Nobody is gonna be RUDE and tell you to bug off, just introduce yourself!

2. If you live on campus, the people in your dorm/hall will be your friends. My first year and still to this day many of my closest friends were those who lived 10 feet away from me. It's geographically perfect having people you like right there, so get to know them!

3. Be open minded for new opportunities you won't ever get again. College is a great time where you have a ton of freedom to do things you couldn't do in high school and may not be able to do later in life. I'm biased AF but you should really consider studying a semester abroad if it's offered. Not only will it be a once in a lifetime opportunity, but you will meet so many amazing friends!

4. Be friendly with your professor. Even if that means saying good morning and smiling to them, DO IT. Not only will it help make the class go better for you, but they're a good connection to have while looking for future jobs.

5. Be yourself. These are the people you'll be around for the next 4 years, don't put on a fake persona, make sure your friends truly like you for who you are.

6. In future semesters, try to schedule classes that will allow you to eat lunch with your friends. Sometimes it can be hard to find people to eat with in the dining hall, so try to coordinate that with your pals.

7. In the end just have tons of fun. Yes, grades do matter in the end, but when you look back on your experience you'll want to remember all the amazing memories you made. If you wanna go out to a bar/club, then SEND IT! Just remember to still be responsible for yourself and not screw yourself over for the next day if you have a presentation or exam.

If you are/were a college student, PLEASE leave more advice in the comments or tag people you know who are entering uni/college soon :)

Literally the best and only piece of advice I have to give people it go to your classes, it is easy to get caught up in all the events and new friends and experiences and freedom but you are there to educate yourself and have been given an opportunity to achieve something only about 6% of the world has which is a college degree. So suck it up and go to your classes huns

I think it鈥檚 important to find friends beyond the mutual friends you share with your roommate. You鈥檙e having to live with this person and more than likely they鈥檙e gonna do some things that annoy you even if you guys are friends. Having friends that your roommate doesn鈥檛 know serves as a good outlet to vent.

But what if you go to community college?
Sent by Bandnerd,Aug 31, 2018
ok literally the best thing i've done so far is talk to the people I sit next to, especially in like classes you are majoring in because i've already found a good group of people I can study with and hang out with.

8. Dont try to cheat or screw with the system. Even the professors who seem like they don't have a clue have seen it all and are always a step ahead of you. You will either not succeed in the attempt or just get caught doing it.

Partying in college is the devil on your shoulder telling you to not study, and if you always have time to party and can still do well, you should probably be challenging yourself more. Chances are, you could be working for a more useful degree or at a more prestigious school. Then again, your undergraduate degree and those grades really don't mean shit once you get a graduate degree. But you're not getting into grad school with shitty grades, so party wisely.

Your grades matter more than anything. If you need to catch up on assignments, do that instead of going out. The one night at the bar lasts for one night, but that F on your transcript in linear algebra will be there forever, and will be seen by grad schools & future employers. It's gonna be awkward when they ask you why you got it! But make sure to have fun, IF your schedule allows it. Not all schedules (especially at some universities) allow you to have BOTH free time and A grades.

One thing I don't see mentioned in the comments is the benefit of making friends in employment. If you're making connections, especially with students years older than you, they can help you prepare for interviews at their current employer or even refer you.

I hate the idea of the above since it hinders people who don't have connections (such as socially awkward people or people with low incomes), but it's just a fact of life that you can use to your benefit!

Yassss!!!!! +++ This is so helpful as I鈥檓 a current college freshman!!! Now my advice:

I鈥檓 learning this now, but you have to actually STUDY. In high school I didn鈥檛 study and pulled out A鈥檚 and B鈥檚, but now, if I don鈥檛 study, I鈥檓 asking for an F. If you study your notes and read the books you are given by the class, then you鈥檒l be fine. Most of the questions on tests are from using books and other outside resources and not their notes. Also be INVOLVED on campus. It鈥檚 a fun way to enjoy your time and meet people who are different but have something in common with you. Be accepting of others when they approach you because who knows, that can be your best friend the rest of your life.
