Why are so many Americans...

...so angry about the idea of building a wall on the Mexican border? Entering the US illegally is a crime, shouldn't the US be trying to reduce crime?

One of the abstract reasons is that it permeates xenophobia. As a more practical reason, it’s a waste of money. If there was more border patrol workers and surveillance software, it wouldn’t be necessary.

More money has to be put into the border either way, but I think the wall is dumb. Create more, long-lasting jobs by increasing border patrol. A wall is unnecessary.

Financially would be super dumb, Only reason it didn't anger conservatives was because they were promised it would be paid off by Mexico... WHICH is idiotic being If we don't want to pay for it Obviously Mexico would not want to pay for it either...

Because massively built walls historically have almost always failed on their intended purpose and cost the nation a painstakingly amount of money for around a couple of years of effective use. The only wall that has semi worked was the Great Wall of China which even now is obsolete and became obsolete even in ancient times. Not to mention the Berlin wall being god awful. Also not to mention the massive tax dollars it will take to build this wall in a nation that is already struggling with debt.

Coupled with the fact that the current administration has lowered taxes but not lowered public government spending and is trying to take on a massive spending operation, thus inflating the national deficit exacerbating the problems the last couple Presidents caused. Furthermore, said wall would have to be built somewhat on privately owned lands for it to be finished meaning lengthy court cases with even more cost to the taxpayer. Follow this up with ever shifting US politics that could render the wall building cancelled after the next election, and its future already jeopardized by Democrats taking back the House
