Char grew up an only child in the West of District 5. This area is famous for its nuclear power plants, specifically supplying Districts 1, 2, and 3, as well as other parts of 5. There has been a streak of accidents here though, with Char being born without his left arm due to the radiation his mother suffers from. Deformations are very common here, with many children being born blind, without legs, or even not surviving at all. In comparison, Char got off lucky
When his name was called at the reaping, many seemed to sympathize with him, however, this area had oddly had a good streak in the games, with a boy getting 4th in the 90th games, and a girl getting 3rd in the 93rd games, despite both being blind. Despite his handicap, Char insists he has the same odds as other people, and that he'll manage just fine with one less body part
Contessa comes from a middle-class District 5 neighbourhood, with her parents being managers at a nearby power plant. It was a good year for this plant, with the new resources of District 13 allowing them to experiment with all kinds of different substances, especially oil. Contessa works a part-time job in the plant as a janitor
When her name was called, there was a gasp from the people in her neighbourhood, as a fairly well off citizen being reaped hadn't been seen for many years. Contessa slowly made her way up to the stage, and in her final speech, addressed many of the other janitors in the plant, telling them that they shouldn't give up on their dreams
Nobody really knows what to think when it comes to these two. They're an anomaly, being one of just 27 conjoined twins living in Panem. Because of this anomaly, it was unknown if they should be classed as one person, or separate, but they were ultimately deemed separate, as they were two different people. Because District 6 was a new career district, the process was awkward, again not really knowing what to do with them, so it was ultimately decided that there wouldn't be a gender separation in the selection and that everyone will compete with each other, with the best placing boy and girl being picked, however, if the twins won, then they would go as the two tributes for the District
In reality, both Ari and Arie were born as boys, but Arie soon revealed herself to be transgender, creating a very interesting scene between the pair. Due to the pair being unable to be separated, Arie couldn't formally have a transition without Ari also transitioning, so in the end, an agreement was finally met that Arie would undergo surgery and have her body formally changed, but no hormones would be taken. It was a long and confusing process that still hasn't been fully explained
Despite seeming to have a handicap, the pair seem to work well together, being very coordinated. Many stated that they had an unfair advantage, but it was clear they were fan favourites, with many wanting to see how the pair would work out. The pair coordinated well, ultimately managing to win District 6's low budget, and still rather messy, selection, becoming the tributes for District 6
