Demi Lovato - Dancing With the Devil...The Art of Starting Over [Review]

Apr 2, 2021 by RedFabFoxy
I definitely looked forward to this, I was interested what direction Demi's gonna go after all these traumatic years... This was such an interesting album honestly, I actually enjoyed it, of course I have my criticisms here and there but I think this will remain as one of her most "important" albums, especially for her.

Anyone - I already heard this one, and it's truly a tearjerker. It's not a song I'd listen to often though, but it's definitely beautiful.

Dancing With the Devil - I did hear this one before the album! This was definitely my fave song by Demi since her TMYLM album. I love how Bond-ish and soulful it sounds, it definitely has replay value while still being such a personal song.

ICU (Madison's Lullabye) - God I HATE it when people spell "lullaby" like that. Anyway, after watching the documentary, I definitely understand where this song's coming from. It's actually a really pretty song, I like the melodies. And awww that ending was so touching :((

The Art of Starting Over - What! I didn't expect this beat/tempo for this song. Umm... Ok, so I expected to love this with how it started, but the verses ended up being the best thing about the song. That chorus was a little weird.. But we'll see, this may have to grow on me.

Lonely People - Ugh I have a feeling this will be a grower too, idk why it's not FULLY grabbing me on first listen. But I actually enjoy the chorus and how it started. The instrumentation is kinda cool, and has a bit of a rock edge maybe?

The Way You Don't Look At Me - Oh wow, this gives me a bit of country/folky vibes, interesting. This one grows on you while you listen to it, it's a heartbreaking-type-of-song, and it's actually really nice.

Melon Cake - I feel like this is a bit JARRING after the previous song... But this one DEFINITELY grows on you also, what is with this grower ass album?! I love it more and more, I feel like this will be a fave the more I listen to it.

Met Him Last Night - Oh hell YES love this intro already. Oh wow, I didn't expect her to meet the DEVIL last night?! (spoiler alert..) And of course the beat has to become more trappy when Ariana comes in, that heaux... 馃拃 I love their harmonies and angelic vocals though 鉂わ笍 But this song isn't EXCELLENT, maybe it also needs to grow on me!

What Other People Say - I mean I KIND of heard this before the album but eh. It's ok though, I do like the chorus a lot... I don't understand why this song is "quieter" than the other songs in terms of sound quality?? iTunes, what's up, what's good?! (maybe Spotify too lol) (btw this is ALSO a massive grower sksksk)

Carefully - This one is interesting, is it me or do some of these songs have a rocky edge?? But anyway I REALLY like this one, it's kinda simple but effective, and I like the details in the production. I also like how Demi shows her vulnerability a lot on this album 馃

The Kind of Lover I Am - Fun fact, this is the song the instagram filter "claimed" for me! Tbh I don't care about these kinda lyrics because yada yada, I love whoever I love, good for u sis... BUT I love the vocals, melodies and it's a nice tempo too. OK but weird outro... 馃拃 Ugh that was so ugly and unnecessary, but oh well..

Easy - CHIIIILE what, I did NOT expect to love this!!! This is by FAR my favourite so far! This sounds SO good, I fucking love the instrumentals, the harmonies, they both sound amazing... And the lyricism is RELATABLE 馃槶 This was truly an experience. THEIR VOCALSSSS though!!!

15 Minutes - I actually did claim this one myself. I love that little growl at the beginning of the chorus and her chuckle (?) during it. But hmm, there are things I love about its instrumental, but the chorus... I don't know, I don't like the rudimentary lyrics. Message is something I like but it coulda been executed much better! Smh! Ugh I'm so conflicted on this one.

My Girlfriends Are My Boyfriend - Oh yes I LOVE this one. It's so groovy! That chorus bangs. Saweetie was cute, she did her thing, but Demi DEFINITELY bodied this. I have a feeling that quite a few people would put this at the bottom of their ranking though, and that gets me PRESSED!

California Sober - I wasn't feeling how this started out but I do think it could be a grower. I liked it more and more I listened to it!

Mad World - WAIT!!!! I KNOW THIS SONG!!! Oh my god I love this song actually, Tears for Fears are actually kinda good. YES yes yes I love this vibe, instrumentation, eerie vocals... Ugh I just forgot how much I love this song, and Demi did SUCH a good job on it.

Butterfly - Why does that chorus melody sound so familiar? Does this sample something? But I actually really like this one, it's such a pleasant listen, I like the vibe a lot... that instrumental is really good and it gets better as the song goes on.

Good Place - Girl why did the start give me acoustic-Fergie teas LOL. But the song... Maybe another grower. It's cute, I liked it more towards the end, I'm really glad that she's OFFICIALLY in a good place though. Stay that way Demi sis!

Fave songs:
Easy
Carefully
My Girlfriends Are My Boyfriend
Mad World (idc if it's a cover it's amazing)

and possibly: Met Him Last Night, The Kind of Lover I Am (bar that outro..), Butterfly, maybe others? There were too many growers/growing songs for me, I deff need more than one listen!
