During my first playthrough, I didn’t like Mike. He’s the typical douchebag I hated in high school, and still hate today. He’s the main person involved in the Hannah prank, the game attempted to make my hate for this man waiver, giving him a cute romantic snowball scene with Jessica right in the beginning. But then gives us a scene with him, possibly (?) cheating on Jessica. Which we hate even more than pranking Hannah. Then the character development starts.
The game gives us a scene in which he can fight with Matt, and then off to the guest cabin with Jessica, which most honestly gives me some of my best memories and one liners of the entire game. The relationship that Mike and Jessica have probably carries him so far up the list, but this one thing puts him right above Jessica.
His bravery, and his resourcefulness. Mike chases after a “Maniac Killer” to get Jessica back, he’s a man of action, chasing her all the way to the elevator, and then chasing the supposed “killer” all the way out of the mines, discovering the sanitorium, where he shows off much of his resourcefulness. Finding new weapons in every corner of the game, and putting together over 75% of the 1952 timeline. Making friends with wolfie is one of the best decisions Mike could have made in the entire game. He’s always attempting to protect his friends even if it means making difficult decisions, such as shooting his ex girlfriend? It's nice to have someone in the game designed to protect him, with that being said, the only thing that keeps Mike from the #1 place in the list is his inability to DIE. Mike and Sam are the only two characters in the game that are unable to die until the final scene. Even if this death may be heroic, it's the only one! I like Mike, don’t get me wrong, but the game could have found ways to include him and Sam in the choice making bloodbath. Maybe if he punched wolfie, a wendigo could kill him in the sanitorium later, or if he didn’t give Wolfie the bone, wolfie would lead him through the sanitorium, but not sacrifice himself for Mike. Give Mike more opportunity to die. This would balance out the game a little more, and possibly end up with multiple story endings.
Of course, with that being said, Mike lived in my first playthrough. Kinda hard for him not to have.
