13 is a really good age for dogs, i'm sure he had a full and happy life with you guys
sorry that you weren't there for him though - i was at uni when my dog died and felt awful that i wasn't there to say goodbye so understand how you feel :(
just take comfort in the fact that the rest of your family were with him and he lived knowing you all loved him x
