Hell's Kitchen S19 Power Rankings (Top 5)

My biggest fear came true and Nikki went home for lack of experience. Damn it, I’m so mad. I wish it was Amber headed home, but I totally understand why Ramsay did what he did. As for the rankings, I think the fairest way is to rank them based on the order in which they got their black jackets, and assessing how I think they’ll do headed into the next round.

5. Amber Lancaster- Amber got a black jacket by the skin of her teeth, but she did it on a dish she has perfected for years. That’s my worry for her. She cooks in her wheelhouse really well. But what happens when you set her out of her comfort zone? Well, we saw just that with her miso cod dish. It wasn’t a success. I think Amber is the most hit or miss of all these contestants, and I think she’s the biggest underdog headed into the black jacket round. I just don’t see her winning it all, especially considering she hasn’t gelled much with Declan or Cody.

4. Kori Sutton- Kori has been consistently high in rankings, but was only the fourth black jacket tonight. I think it’s because challenges themselves has never really been her strong point. She’s almost the opposite of Cody, where she doesn’t stand out in challenges but does in services. Standing out in services is what really matters in Hell’s Kitchen, so I have no worries for her. I think it ultimately comes down to finding her voice. She’s the least recognizable of the season because Mary Lou, Declan, Cody, and Amber have had so much screen time because of their bigger personalities. She just has to stand out, and she could make a serious run for the title.

3. Cody Candelario- Cody earned his black jacket doing what he’s been doing all season, succeeding in the challenges. He is a good voice of reason on his team, even if his dinner service performances aren’t anything too amazing. I think he’ll do well in services, my only worry is that his ability as a chef outweighs his ability to lead in a kitchen. He’s still pretty young and could get into some tiffs with his teammates. I do think it’ll be fun seeing him and Mary Lou in the kitchen together, considering we’ve seen lots of their chemistry this season.

2. Declan Horgan- Declan has always been one of the best chefs. His only issues this season have stemmed from communication issues, so I am totally unsurprised that he received a black jacket so early on his cooking merit alone. I still worry that Declan may have communication issues going forward, but with Marc out of the mix, and people like Mary Lou and Kori now in his kitchen, I could see him really gelling well and doing a solid job in this black jacket round.

1. Mary Lou Davis- Mary Lou has never topped a list, but she’s always been close (placing 2nd in the top 13, 8, and 7), and she’s finally broken through (and at the right time). She really earned that first black jacket, proving that her palate was strong and that she could really compete with the big dogs. She’s her own worst enemy in terms of morale, and she really proved that she should always be confident in herself. I think she was the most unassuming black jacket if you had asked me in the beginning of the season, but she has really grown and has yet to make a huge blunder. She could really win this.

I think we have four serious contenders here. Declan and Cody have been solid chefs, but haven’t always stood out in services. Kori has stood out in services, but hasn’t been shown as much as others. And Mary Lou is pretty much a bundle of joy and consistency. I really think Mary Lou may pull this out.
