Dancing With The Stars S29 Power Rankings (Round 5)

Oct 19, 2020 by PowerRankings101
imageMore 10s come our way tonight (for 80s night, the best grouping of songs thus far this season). We said goodbye to Jesse and Sharna. I think Jesse was one of the weaker dancers this season (I’ve been saying it for WEEKS), but I didn’t think he’d be gone this early! Looks like the voters came to their senses. For the first time this season, the previous bottom 2 candidate (being Monica & Val) didn’t land in the bottom 2, so we can no longer follow that trend as to who will go home. Should make for an interesting ranking.

12. Jesse Metcalfe and Sharna Burgess- Jesse has somehow gotten worse over the course of the last week. This wasn’t very clean, and seemed to be heavy once again. I think Sharna is such a great pro, but she needs a partner who will truly grow each week and emerge as a contender. The closest she got was James Hinchcliffe and Nick Carter, and Jesse just wasn’t going to be that partner for her. And yes, I know she won with Bobby Bones but that was a popularity vote, and wasn’t a worthy partner of Sharna the way others were. Justice for Sharna!

11. Chrishell Stause and Gleb Savchenko- Chrishell seemed to be really improving, but took a big dip this week. I loved her passion and love for NKOTB, but I think the dancing was messy and didn’t have enough cha cha. For that reason, she ranks this low.

10. Vernon Davis and Peta Murgatroyd- This was pretty rough. I’ve felt like Vernon has been consistently overscored, and this time, I think he landed right where he belonged. It was stiff, disoriented, and stood out as one of the weakest of the night for sure. I do think sending Jesse home over Vernon was the right move, but I do think this bodes a little bit of trouble for Vernon going forward.

9. AJ McLean and Cheryl Burke- I do think I enjoy AJ and Cheryl’s more uptempo stuff a wee bit more (it suits his energy more), though I still appreciated what they did with this routine. It was comfortable, joyous, and sentimental. I wasn’t blown away by it, but I can see AJ’s improvement, and think he is one to continue to watch.

8. Justina Machado and Sasha Fraber- Justina was a huge standout on week one, but I do think with every passing week, more and more people continue to improve and have almost overshadowed her. I also think performing first hurt her a bit, as I forgot about her performance by the end of the night. Regardless, this was still a very good dance. It was fun, well choreographed, and had an iconic final pose. Justina has proven some amazing consistency. Now that other people are emerging as big contenders, I need to see Justina regain her spot at the top of the pack and breakthrough with a truly memorable dance.

7. Skai Jackson and Alan Bersten- Skai went from scoring a 10 to getting three 8s. She wasn’t the best tonight, feeling a tad out of her element for 80s night, but she definitely kept up well with the choreography and had lots of fun, it was evident. She lit up the stage with energy, and with a tad more refinement, she’ll be back up on the leaderboards in no time.

6. Monica Aldama and Valentin Chmerkovskiy- I do love how Monica bounced back from being on the bottom with a vengeance. I honestly felt like the 9s were a tad overscored. I do think her dancing was pretty great, though there were some awkward spots throughout, particularly between the two of them as a pair. The judges threw 9s at this routine. I’d probably keep it at an 8, but I still enjoyed this nonetheless.

5. Jeannie Mai and Brandon Armstrong- Jeannie is BACK! I loved Jeannie’s dance this week. It was fun, energized, clean, and perfectly embodied the personalities of both Jeannie and Brandon. She has still yet to breakthrough to front-runner status, as there are some heavier hitters left, but I do think she’s slowly growing into something amazing.

4. Nev Schulman and Jenna Johnson- Nev and Jenna have been the top dogs this competition, no doubt. I do think this take on “Take On Me” (see what I did there?) was almost a bit too fast. Was that on the DWTS band’s end? Was that what Jenna wanted? What Nev wanted? It was SO fast, it almost made the choreography a tad messier. I do think Nev still managed to keep up for the most part, and the footwork was exceptional, even if the two of them together fell out of it a few times. I love Nev and think he’s a really great dancer, so while he isn’t topping the list for me this week, I have no doubt he’ll continue ranking pretty high up.

3. Kaitlyn Bristowe and Artem Chigvinstev- This was really amazing. The judges (and me) wanted something a little faster, and that’s what we got. They glided across the floor and had a truly beautiful partnership once again. Not the standout of the night from a memorable sense, but still a damn good tango.

2. Nelly and Daniella Karagach- I cannot believe how highly I have ranked Nelly, but hey…this was GREAT. I think I’ve been pretty low on Nelly because he never seemed to comfortable on the dance floor. But he blossomed tonight. This was his true breakthrough, and I think he really emerged as a DANCER tonight. Sure, there were better scoring dances, and probably some better technique, but based off of sheer enjoyment, energy, passion, charisma, and heart, I have to put Nelly this high. He made me overjoyed, and I gave him all my votes. Very impressed.

1. Johnny Weir and Britt Stewart- Johnny won the night for me, and he did on the scoring charts too. This was exceptional. His lyrical background really came into play here, though I think he exceeded the beautiful lines and shapes to commit to beautiful storytelling as well. There was emotion, passion, and heart. I think Britt and Daniella both top the charts this week for having the best dances of the night, both proving that they are worthy pros, despite being newbies. The choreography was sublime. Loved loved loved it.

So last time, I said that whoever went home was whoever was in the bottom 2 last time. But since Monica & Val were safe, that trend is debunked. Every week, the person with the lowest SCORE has gone home, so now it’s just predicting who will have the lowest score NEXT week. Hmm. Who will score lowest? Statistics show that it’ll probably be Nelly or Chrishell, though I can’t see Nelly bombing that much given how great he was this week. Chrishell has been rough on scores before, but she has been getting lots of good following and voter support. This leaves Vernon, who while his season total has been higher than Nelly or Chrishell, he hasn’t been too far off from the bottom a few times. He was in the bottom 2 this week (which judging by Monica & Val, doesn’t mean anything), though I do think Vernon has potential to land in the bottom 2 again. With the numbers dwindling, I truly think Chrishell won’t have much more room to hide, and between Chrishell and Vernon, I think the judges will save whoever danced better.

PREDICTIONS:

Going Home- Chrishell Stause & Gleb Savchenko
