Dancing With The Stars S29 Power Rankings (Round 1)

Sep 21, 2020 by PowerRankings101
imageAnother season of Dancing With The Stars is underway, and we may wanna call it Dancing with the People You Never Thought You’d See In the Same Room Together. Derek is on the judge’s table this season…love it. We have Carrie Ann being super strict on lifts as always (people have wondered what the rules are. Basically, certain styles accept lifts, such as contemporary, salsa, charleston, etc. The ones that don’t are the more traditional: waltz, tango, cha-cha, paso double, samba, quickstep, and jive. That is why Carrie Ann was strict with some lifts and not with others). It was a solid premiere. I think some people showed some serious potential, while others are going to be on our screen way too long for the wrong reasons (Sean Spicer style). Let’s rank this first group (in the comments, you’ll find my season predictions for overall finishes).

15. Carole Baskin and Pasha Pashkov- There isn’t much to say here. She is the Sean Spicer of the season, who will go way too far, but provide some cringeworthy entertainment along the way. This was terrible, but probably the highlight of the night. Ranked at the bottom, but there’s no way in hell she’s going home first if fans want to keep the utmost entertainment on their tv screens. Carole is a terrible dancer, doesn’t show much potential, but I am highly anticipating what is next. (As entertaining as she is though, I’ll be mad if she goes longer than 4 weeks).

14. Chrishell Stause and Gleb Savchenko- I didn’t know of Chrishell ahead of the season, though her popularity and physique had me believe that she’d be much more elegant and successful than she was. This was surely a disappointment, and performing so early in the night doesn’t do her any favors either. She seems very tense and stiff throughout. I do think there might be some potential, I just don’t know how long she’ll be able to go before that potential runs out.

13. Charles Oakley and Emma Slater- This wasn’t a good dance by any means, but it was endearing. Unlike Carole, who was too far outside the box, and Chrishell, who just seemed way too nervous and stiff, Charles played it safe, but also kept it super warm and joyful. He clearly showed that he enjoyed dancing, and that might honestly buy him a few weeks in the competition. I really like Charles, and I know he’s not destined to go far at ALL in this competition, but even Lamar Odom last season (who had a similar approach to the ballroom) made it to the fourth round.

12. Jesse Metcalfe and Sharna Burgess- Jesse was the first person of the night that I felt was overscored. Not severely, but I don’t think he was on par with people like AJ, Jeannie, Anne, or Johnny. Yet, he scored alongside them with many 6s. I felt like Jesse’s dancing was very aggressive and heavy, making it almost tough to watch at parts. The quickstep is an impossible first dance to master, so I won’t hold that against him too badly, but it was pretty sloppy for sure. Sharna, like I say later with Cheryl, is the perfect partner to whip some of Jesse’s inconsistencies into shape. She’s seasoned, and has worked with the most unseasoned first dancers. With that said, Jesse’s first dance really didn’t win me over, though I see potential, especially having Sharna on his side.

11. Nelly and Danielle Karagach- Nelly did an okay job. I think he’ll get votes because he’s Nelly, and he has a fan base. He’s nostalgic, but I also think AJ McLean brings that similar throwback musician nostalgia too, and has the dance chops to match. Nelly isn’t a bad dancer but didn’t necessarily stand out in a jam packed night of dancing. He has potential, but having a new pro, I don’t necessarily think he’ll make it TOO far in the competition.

10. Vernon Davis and Peta Murgatroyd- Like Chrishell, I worry Vernon going so early in the night may prevent him from dominating in audience votes, but he did better than I expected him to do this week. He showed some great elegance and poise. I think there were some stiffness issues, of course, but for an athlete, I didn’t expect it to be so smooth and graceful. He could last long if his routines become a tad more memorable, thought I trust Peta as a choreographer and think they’ll do well this season.

9. Kaitlyn Bristowe and Artem Chigvinstev- Kaitlyn was my pre-season winner pick before the season started. With Hannah Brown winning last year, it just seemed written in the stars that Kaitlyn would follow. I do think, however, she underwhelmed a bit. I expected her to be a lot more energetic, but it seems like her energy faulted in spots. She is still good at picking up the choreo, which is why I think she’ll still do well in the competition, but I expected her to be the far and above front runner, which she wasn’t.

8. Johnny Weir and Britt Stewart- I expected fireworks with Johnny, and that’s what we got. I do think he shows potential to really make a huge statement this season with his energy and outside-the-box nature. He’s going to be a standout for all the faster dances, but I’m not sure how he’ll do when things slow down. I think he’s got some great potential, and I’m glad he won’t be going out early like he did on Masked Singer.

7. Anne Heche and Keo Motsepe- Anne is one of the older ladies on the season, but like past contestants like Kate Flannery from last year and even Jennifer Grey, I think age is but a number for her. Keo hasn’t had the best track record, which is why I worry a bit, but she seemed to have one of the more successful first outings of the night. She was moving with confidence and joy, and that’s what really stands out, especially on a first week where almost everyone is scoring low in the 5s and 6s.

6. Monica Aldama and Valentin Chmerkovskiy- Monica is a coach, so it was interesting to see her take on the performer side. I think she showed lots of good confidence and potential, and could be a serious threat to win the whole thing if she continues at this pace. It was a great first dance, even if it lacked a tad bit of smoothness. Excited to see what’s next for her.

5. Jeannie Mai and Brandon Armstrong- I think Jeannie had a good first dance. She brought lots of exuberance and energy to the dance floor. The lifts were great (again, thank god the salsa allows for lifts), but I do think her other stuff needs to be noted too. It was pretty dang good. I don’t know much of Jeannie in her career field, so I cannot say I’m necessarily clicking with her for a votes perspective, but as a dancer, she’s winning me over already.

4. AJ McLean and Cheryl Burke- AJ started off the show really strong. I felt like he had such good musicality and energy, especially for a first dance. His excitement is going to be something to root for throughout the season. If someone is going to whip him into shape fast, it’s Cheryl. She seems like the match made in heaven, and I think AJ is finale bound just like his buddy Nick Carter was on his season.

3. Skai Jackson and Alan Bersten- It’s no doubt that Skai was one of the best of the night. She already has so much passion and precision skills. I’m not sure how much background she has in dancing, but like Disney star Jordan Fisher (who won a few seasons back), I do think she’s a natural dancer and someone who could steamroll high scores every week. I do worry that she might not click with the older voters as much, but I do think Alan proved last year that he is championship worthy, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she goes a long way.

2. Nev Schulman and Jenna Johnson- Nev was one of my two favorites of the night. He surely surprised me. I expected him to be stiff as ever, but he really proved how graceful he was. He’s the opposite of Johnny, where I wonder how Nev will do with the more fast-tempo stuff like quickstep or jive, since he’s going to nail all the slower dances. The foxtrot, while difficult, is a lot more patient and not as cardio-heavy. I do think Nev shows some real potential. He was a joy to watch start to finish and I sincerely think he could make a run and potentially be competing for the mirror ball come finale night.

1. Justina Machado and Sasha Fraber- This was hands down the best dance of the night. Justina seemed at home on the dance floor. She was perfect with rhythm, and proved that she could entertain and crowd please while still nailing every step. I really don’t know if there are many critiques, aside from some footwork needing refinement (but hey, it’s week one). For a week one debut, this was wildly impressive. Does she have the same fan base as someone like the Catfish host or Backstreet Boy? I’m not so sure. But I think she could still reach the finale, and if she continues at this pace, I’d give her my vote.

So after the jam packed night of dancers, my favorites are Justina and Nev, and I have to acknowledge how well Skai did as well. As for who else could make the finale, I think AJ, Jeannie, Monica, Kaitlyn, Johnny, Anne, and Vernon all show potential. Hell, Sharna could even whip Jesse into shape and get him to the finals. It’s going to be a competitive season with only a few outliers. I think there’s a chance we see Charles go home, but I think because she went so early in the night and scored so poorly, I think Chrishell may be the first eliminated. She disappointed, and I don’t think her fanbase is as huge as some others. I could be wrong, but that’s my thought.

PREDICTIONS:

Going Home- Chrishell Stause and Gleb Savchenko
