America's Got Talent S15 Power Rankings (Quarterfinals, Week 4)

Sep 8, 2020 by PowerRankings101
imageWent 5/5, though not in the order I expected, last week. Here is the last batch of quarterfinalists. Again, I know nothing about any of them! Looking forward to watching them perform.

11. Noah Epps- This is one of those cases where I feel like his audition was really good, and this performance did him no favors because of how crazy the surroundings were. Why so many lights and so much spectacle? It really took away from the dancing itself. The dancing was fine, but nothing that I’m incredibly impressed by. I keep thinking of Merrick Hanna from a few seasons ago, who was one of my favorites in this type of dance. This just didn’t come close to that.

10. Divas & Drummers of Compton- This was fun, but I do think there are other marching bands that do what they do just as well (kind of what I say later about the cheerleading group). It was good, but was probably one of the most forgettable of the night. Especially coming off of Malik Dope last week, this is even more underwhelming.

9. Bello Sisters- I’ll admit, I didn’t vibe with this as much as others did. I think, for me, it was again the production value! Some of the production value (Celina, Kenadi, etc) has been INCREDIBLE, whereas people like Noah (and now Bello Sisters) have had their acts ruined by the lights and spectacle. The dark lights really took away from the act. Obviously they’re talented, I can see that. But having everything overshadowed by this spectacle, I had trouble focusing on the actual talent. Based on the judges’ comments, I do think they actually have a better shot at going through than my ranking gives them credit for…I just don’t think it worked for me. Should they get to perform again, I hope they tone it down and focus on the acrobatics themselves, because they are impressive. This is the act I most want to redeem themselves going forward.

8. Kenadi Dodds- Kenadi already has such a sweet and charming story. I also love the ambiance of her act with the staging and the white piano. I think she’ll garner a lot of votes because she’s likable and relatable. As a vocal, it was really well sung, but nothing too incredibly unique or special. There are other singers in the competition, including many we heard tonight, that I think overshadowed her and gave more impressive vocals. I do like Kenadi and think she could get some attention from a younger voting demographic, but I’m not so sure it was one of my favorites. Also, side note, as for the audience booing Howie, I think Howie is entitled to his opinion and for Terry to back him up and say “you’re wrong” didn’t sit well with me. It’s his opinion! No opinion is wrong! That’s all. End rant. Good job Kenadi.

7. C.A. Wildcats- Having performed in a production of “Bring it On” in college, I definitely think cheerleading is something that lots of people really underestimate. It is extremely difficult, extremely precise, and extremely tiring. This was a really great cheerleading routine, and that’s about it. Do I think it was a dang flawless routine? Yes. Do I think another cheerleading group could replicate it just as good? Also yes. I think they went too early in the night to stand out after a slew of some pretty great competitors, but I do think they did an amazing job. I’m worried AGT might not be the right platform for them, but I can’t deny how well executed this routine was. It’s not easy stuff.

6. Lightwave Theatre Company- This act is such a cool concept; instead of solely using light effects, they use handmade life-size puppets as well. I thought it was a beautiful way of telling a story that felt so current and relevant to what we’ve been struggling with as a world in terms of the pandemic. I’m honestly surprised that Howie buzzed them. Of all acts of these four quarterfinals, this was far from the worst. I didn’t see the initial audition, so I don’t know if they “upped their game” or not, so I can’t discredit them credit there. But I thoroughly enjoyed the innovative new art form. It was slower, but I think it was so impressive to see what they could do and the artistry of it all. I dug it.

5. Alex Hooper- Alex is so obnoxious but I think I love his act. The roasts were creative, JUST family friendly enough, but also pretty bold. The way he was speaking got irritating after a while, but it really fits his character well. We need more contestants like this, who take risks like this. Sure, the sentimental AGT stuff is great…but there’s something about this that just makes me crack the hell up.

4. Celina Graves- Celina’s voice is so unique and beautiful. I do think the song choice got a tad repetitive, but her vocals were so good, it made up for it. The song did allow for some great big moments, but also some great restraint. Just a solid vocal performance that stood out amongst one of the better acts of the night.

3. Broken Roots- These guys are so likable on their video alone. I really enjoyed their vocals and felt like they stood out, even if their acoustic sound is very stripped down from some other production numbers throughout the night. While I think Celina may have given a bigger, bolder vocal, I do think Broken Roots picked a better song and edge her out a tad. This was really impressive and beautiful.

2. Resound- Holy crap this was excellent. Really carried the first half of the night of the show for sure. The harmonies were freaking perfect. The song was well performed, well emoted, and well connected. Just brilliant. I have no complaints. In the night with great vocals from people like Celina and Broken Roots, this still stood out as the best vocal of the night from a music perspective. Whew.

1. Brandon Leake- Perfection. Spoken word is such a unique talent, and this is the perfect show to showcase such a niche, but vital, talent. Leake’s performance was exceptional. The emotion, the heart, the power. I can’t wait to see what he brings next (cause he is DEFINITELY going through). Absolutely terrific. The most important act of this competition for sure.

Brandon is definitely in, and I think Broken Roots and Resound will get through pretty easily too, as their stories matched with vocals are all so powerful. As for who is OUT, I do think getting buzzed may hurt Alex Hooper and Lightwave Theatre Company’s chances (even if I did enjoy their acts). I also think, with Hooper, too many people will find it overtly offensive—which is the goal, but still—and vote for some more inspirational acts. I can’t see Noah Epps going through either. That leaves Bello Sisters, Drummers, Wildcats, Kenadi Dodds, and Celina. I think Celina and Kenadi will get a shot at the Dunkin’ Save, as will Bello Sisters because of how deep into the night they performed. I do think Bello Sisters resonates with audiences more than they did me, so I think they’ll get that. Between Kenadi and Celina, I think it’s a no brainer. So those are my five.

PREDICTIONS:

Going Through- Brandon Leake, Broken Roots, Resound, Bello Sisters, and Celina Graves

Going Home- Kenadi Dodds, C.A. Wildcats, Lightwave Theatre Company, Noah Epps, Alex Hooper, and Divas & Drummers of Compton
