America's Got Talent S15 Power Rankings (Quarterfinals, Week 3)

Aug 27, 2020 by PowerRankings101
imageWe’re here with another night of AGT. No guest judges, just eleven acts, three judges, one Terry Crews, and a great night of talent ahead. (Also, went 4/5 last week, only missing Kelvin unfortunately). This night of talent was MASSIVELY stacked, so those ranked lower aren’t necessarily bad, this was just a tough night to compete and almost every act has a reason to go forward.

11. Usama Siddiquee- Yikes. Maybe with an audience, things would be a little less awkward, but the misogyny jokes just don’t land well, especially when the world is in the state it’s in and some jokes are simply insensitive (saying in the pre-video “I’d rather risk the COVID stuff than live with my parents” was just really cringe and disrespectful for those who have lost loved ones to COVID and would love to have more moments with them. Also insensitive was the obvious blunder of calling Heidi a tramp). His airport jokes were fine, but I also feel like the awkward silences made the jokes more stale. Worst of the night.

10. Annie Jones- Getting to see Annie live her Harry Potter dream was enough to make me root for her. There were some shaky notes throughout, and this did feel a bit karaoke, but I do love Annie’s energy and confidence. It could ultimately come down to song choice, which felt fitting for her nature as a performer, but not as vocally impressive. For her age, I think she shows some real potential. The weakest vocal of the night, but not terrible by any means.

9. Bonebreakers- This was a lot of fun, and definitely filled with energy and talent. I think their type of act isn’t as well catered to the big stage as some other acts are, but I had fun regardless. It’s just so tough in such a talent-packed night to rank anyone this low. They did great.

8. Nolan Neal- This vocal was nice, and I think Nolan has a unique quality to his voice. Between all the other singing acts today, and the wide array of talent tonight, I don’t know if this was enough to stand out, despite being an original. There was one peak moment where he stood out, but the rest of the song seemed a bit too simple for me. I do think many will connect to his story and his unique quality, though, so he could sneak through. Not my favorite, but still a great showing amongst a really talented night of talent.

7. Dance Town Family- I usually love dance acts, and this was no exception. I do think, coming off of BAD Salsa from last week, this wasn’t AS impressive, but the unison dancing and communal effort was really marvelous to see. Going first in the night, they may be forgotten by the time voting rolls around (as we saw with Kelvin last week), but I think they did a great job. I also loved the ambiance of having the waters of Miami in the background. Excellent way to start the show.

6. Sheldon Riley- At the beginning, I wasn’t quite sure how the song would escalate, but I was still intrigued by Sheldon’s mystery and style. His voice is actually pretty amazing, and as the song went on, it jumped leaps and bounds and stood out as something truly special, unique, and stunning. The big notes at the end of the song were really clean in tone, even if a few notes went a tad pitchy early on. He is not just great for his aesthetic, but for all the talent that comes with him too. Great originality, I think he was great.

5. Alan Silva- Alan is an inspiration and is one of the best at what he does. I do think a few of the moves were a tad repetitive, but his final few stunts were truly breathtaking. That death drop?? WOAH. I don’t know how well it’ll translate to voters at home, but I hope he goes through to the next round. He was really great, and like I said, a huge inspiration.

4. Max Major- I was really impressed with Max’s act. It was almost like a Nolan movie, where we see the trick first and then he went back in time to show us how he pulled it off. Getting the interactive audience involved was also genius on his part. Really great stuff. We’ve seen tricks like it before, but it’s even more impressive given how he pulled it off in this format and in this state of the world. A bit more stage presence and he could go a long way. Well done.

3. W.A.F.F.L.E. Crew- While the dancing wasn’t perfect, the energy and charisma that comes from these guys is absolutely infectious. I loved how they used their set and surroundings to really create a cool story and sense of personality. This is as authentic as you can get with a dance crew, all bringing individual strengths and skills to the routine, staying grounded and never forgetting to entertain. It felt like I was there in NYC again, and that made me emotional (since I haven’t been since March when COVID struck and I went home to Jersey). Really impressive, really fun.

2. Cristina Rae- Cristina has a truly beautiful story, with that connection to her son. Heartwarming. For a song like “Hallelujah,” you need to bring something unique and literally groundbreaking to it. And she DID. I think this was such a poised, clean, respectful, touching, soul-soothing rendition of the song. Her riffs and runs were phenomenal, as well as when she went into the super high head-voice operatic range. Woah. It was scaled back from some of the more anthemic performances of the night, and I honestly appreciated the rawness of it. One of my favorites tonight.

1. Malik DOPE- Holy crap, this was phenomenal. I’ve never seen anything like it before, and I don’t think I will for some time. He makes drumming an even cooler art form by bringing acrobatics and great special effects to it. It was perfectly synchronized and choreographed. I don’t think I’ve been this blown away by an instrument act like this before. This was hands down the best of the night, and so so special. I hope he goes through.

Well, we’ve come to the prediction part, and this could go a ton of different ways. I think, because of the Golden Buzzer trend, we’ll see Cristina Rae and W.A.F.F.L.E. Crew get through pretty easily. As for that third spot, I think there are multiple names in contention. The originality of Malik DOPE or Sheldon Riley, the spectacle of something like Bonebreakers or Max Major, the inspiration of Alan Silva or Nolan Neal. I’ll say, based on personal preference and sheer originality, that Malik will get that third spot. As for the Dunkin’ Save, I think it’ll come down to acts that performed later in the night and might’ve stood out most: Max Major, Alan Silva, and Sheldon Riley. I do think Max will get a spot because magicians have done well in this round historically. As for Alan vs. Sheldon, I really don’t know how it’s gonna go. I think Heidi will go with Alan, Sofia will go with Sheldon, which leaves it to Howie, and I do think Howie will go with Alan. It’s close though. Don’t be surprised to see Nolan, Bonebreakers, or even Dance Town Family sneak in to the Dunkin Save. It’s truly up in the air, as this was an amazingly talented bunch.

PREDICTIONS:

Going Through- Cristina Rae, W.A.F.F.L.E. Crew, Malik DOPE, Max Major, and Alan Silva

Going Home- Sheldon Riley, Nolan Neal, Bonebreakers, Usama Siddiquee, Annie Jones, and Dance Town Family

Actual: Alan Silva, Cristina Rae, Max Major, W.A.F.F.L.E. Crew, Malik DOPE

Predicted perfectly, except I didn't see W.A.F.F.L.E. Crew or Malik DOPE making it into the Dunkin' Save. Either way, I'm pretty happy with these 5
