American Idol S18 Power Rankings (Top 11)

May 10, 2020 by PowerRankings101
imageI will say, I’m definitely not too surprised about who made it into the top 11, except for Sophia, who surprised me and actually gave a pretty good performance. As for who didn’t make it, it sucks Lauren Spencer-Smith didn’t get in, and a shame that there wasn’t a spot for Kimmy either. I think the top 11 is fairly strong, but there are some people I think who underperformed tonight, so here we go heading into Disney week.

11. Grace Leer- Grace wasn’t my favorite heading into the top 11, and certainly isn’t my favorite now. Her “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” had very little star moments, and had some pitch problems throughout. Hitting big loud notes is nice sometimes, but it’s also important to have restraint. I think Grace was easily the weakest of the night in my book.

10. Makayla Phillips- Makayla has been branded as the big “pop star” belter of the group, and she went with a soft country tune. She already didn’t make the top 10, but the judges gave her a shot to make it the top 11. She had this one shot to prove that America was wrong, and she was BORING. I never thought I’d say that about Makayla. It sounded pretty, but for the final performance of the night, I worry that it just fell too low in my expectations and was severely underwhelming given the obstacle she already had to climb. Dang, Makayla, I thought you had this.

9. Jovin Webb- Jovin has a star quality and charisma like no other, but “Voodoo” just seemed like the wrong song choice in my opinion. He just didn’t seem to show off enough of his vocal prowess, and while the soul and grit were still there, the range of the song just stayed pretty one note for me. I worry that he was dis-serviced the most by the change to “At home” performances. He just needs an audience.

8. Francisco Martin- I’ll admit, I wasn’t the biggest Francisco fan, and I’m still not…BUT this was by far his strongest performance yet, and I think he really did a good job keeping things more simple this time around. It wasn’t enough to crack my personal top 7, but will he crack America’s? Probably.

7. Dillon James- Dillon did a good rendition of “Yesterday.” I think the judges and I saw the same problems. It seemed rushed, and just lacked any sort of originality to it. It was an average cover of a song we all know. I worry that Dillon could be in a bit of danger, but he seems to have a strong fan following that should keep him around. I think he’ll step it up this week, and his overall season performance should carry him into the top 7. He just cracks my top 7, and I hope America gives him that shot as well.

6. Louis Knight- Louis was better this week. It was still a tad underwhelming, knowing the incredible potential he has, but I do think he stepped it up and will receive a spot in the top 7 because of it. I like his quality, I just HOPE he picks a song that really suits him better next week. I think this will finally be his breakout week coming up.

5. Just Sam- After Sam’s vocal, I wasn’t too blown away. But she still somehow came out above many of the rest. And this is simply because of her heart and charisma. Even if “Grandma’s Hands” didn’t blow me away from a musical perspective, she’s still captivating and a great talent to watch. I really don’t see how she misses the finale. She could even win.

4. Jonny West- Jonny did well this week, as his rendition of “Faithfully” was beautiful. I just worry that it might be a little too subtle in regards to some other powerhouses and recognizable forces in the competition. What I can appreciate is that Jonny has a style that he sticks to, and it really shows good artistry and potential for him in the long run. As subtle as it was, it was memorable and one of the best of the night.

3. Sophia James- Sophia’s “In My Room” was surprisingly stunning. I really connected with it, and thought it was Sophia’s best yet. I know I haven’t been too friendly to her, and like Francisco, I think she really improved in my eyes. She’s just SO similar to Julia, it’ll be interesting to see if they both get spots, or if one of them gets cut. Only time will tell.

2. Arthur Gunn- Arthur nailed it again this week. It’s expected that he’s going to kill everything he does. I love Arthur and hope he gets the dream of a lifetime. There’s nothing he can’t do, and I”m sure he’s gonna take a spin to a Disney song and top this list again. Just a prediction, of course, but I see him standing out then too. Great performance.

1. Julia Gargano- My favorite of the night. It’s no secret she’s been one of my top two of the season (ironically, with my other top spot Arthur), but she took her abilities to a whole new level this week. She sang one of my favorite songs, about my favorite city, and she nailed it. The vocals were spot on. The performance was top notch. I love Julia and hope she makes it through, because she has serious potential to blow the rest of the competition away.

Sophia had a MASSIVE increase on my radar, and I REALLY hope she snags a spot in the top 7 (she grew on me!). I think Arthur, Just Sam, and Louis are all locks. They have just had such captivating stories and fan followings from the start. I do think Francisco will make it through too, as America loves him. I think Jonny did enough to snag a spot as well. As for my final two spots, I think Julia is a lock (many others agree that she’s the best of the night), but because she’s so similar in style to Sophia, I think Sophia will get sent packing. This means Dillon will snag the last spot, despite some critical judge comments. Dillon has been a big presence on the show as well, and I don’t see him being cut. Just when she grew on me, I think Sophia will be sent home, but I’m rooting for Julia too much and think America will give the edge to Julia.

PREDICTIONS:

Making the Top 7- Arthur Gunn, Just Sam, Louis Knight, Francisco Martin, Jonny West, Julia Gargano, and Dillon James

Just Missing the Top 7- Sophia James

Going Home- Makayla Phillips, Grace Leer, Jovin Webb

stephlust I hope it's either him or Julia. Wouldn't mind seeing dillon or Sam win either. But Arthur is just so beyond unique
