Top Chef S17 Power Rankings (Top 8)

We saw Eric unfortunately go out on a concept that just didn’t make its way through the pitch phase. Stephanie should have gone home, and it’s a shame that she had immunity on this week of all weeks (I liked Stephanie a lot last time, but this season, she just hasn’t been my favorite), because she was clearly the weakest of the bunch had she not been saved from immunity. Karen came back, did a good job, but it was Kevin and Gregory who are getting their restaurants. So let’s rank.

8. Stephanie Cmar- Stephanie had the weakest performance this week, had it not been for her delicious immunity winning lamb tacos. I just don’t think Stephanie stacks up to the rest of the group this season, as much as I liked her last time she competed. Even if the head chefs seem to get heat mostly in restaurant wars, I think Stephanie could be in some real danger if she missteps.

7. Lee Anne Wong- Lee Anne was the only other person on the bottom who was vulnerable, next to Eric. She could’ve easily gone home. I do think Lee Anne was playing the game a bit this week, as she made sure not to come out on top, in fear of being in the hot seat for restaurant wars. But in playing it safer, she almost went HOME. This gamble could’ve come back to haunt Lee Anne.

6. Karen Akunowicz- Karen returned, and she had smooth sailing this week, even if she didn’t stand out completely. The previews showed that Karen could be in a bit of a quarrel with others this week, which could hurt her chances a smidge, but I do think her restaurant track record should be enough to be safe this week regardless.

5. Kevin Gillespie- I do think Gregory is going to be a stronger head chef than Kevin, which puts a little heat on Kevin. But even if Kevin loses, I think he’ll still do a good job personally, and it’ll be someone else’s fault if he loses. With only a single elimination—and no double elimination—I’m not too worried about Kevin or Greg, as vulnerable as they may be.

4. Gregory Gordet- Like I’ve said with Kevin, the people who are “team leaders” often take lots of heat in restaurant wars, in both good and bad ways. I think Greg will come out on top for his restaurant over Kevin, so I’m not too worried, but should Greg’s restaurant really crash and burn, I GUESS Gregory could go home.

3. Bryan Voltaggio- Bryan really hasn’t stood out a ton at all, but because Kevin and Gregory have so much pressure on them, and Karen, Lee Anne, and Stephanie have been the most inconsistent, this lands Bryan to the 3 spot. He does work well on teams and should be fine this week.

2. Brian Malarkey- Malarkey not winning the pitch was honestly much better for his game than him winning it. If he had won, there would probably be pressure as the “head chef” of his own restaurant, and he would’ve certainly gone down with the ship had he won. But he’s now just a sous chef, or front of house, I couldn’t remember from the preview. Either way, a restaurant is where Malarkey thrives, so I actually think this is one of his safest weeks.

1. Melissa King- Melissa wasn’t one of the winners of the challenge, but I still put her above Kevin and Greg just because Kevin and Greg now have SO much pressure on themselves. Melissa has no pressure, and I really don’t think she’ll do anything too bad to royally screw up on restaurant wars.

I can’t believe I have Malarkey as high as I do, but with Restaurant Wars, people like Kevin and Gregory might actually be in danger should they lose. And then there’s Lee Anne, Stephanie, and Karen who ALL have had near-elimination dishes (in Karen’s case, she’s ALREADY been eliminated). I do think we’ll see one of those bottom 3 go home, and could honestly see it being any of them. I give the edge to the person who should’ve gone home last week.
