Top Chef S17 Power Rankings (Top 12)

Apr 9, 2020 by PowerRankings101
imageWell, I knew Jamie wasn’t a top dog, but I didn’t expect him to go this early. Lee Anne keeps hanging on toward the bottom of the pack, while Eric bounced back, and we found top dogs like Kevin and Karen fall a bit low in the elimination challenge. It was a great episode of artistic plates, and now it’s time to rank the contestants going into the top 12.

12. Lee Anne Wong- Lee Anne keeps landing in the bottom of nearly every elimination challenge, and her luck has to run out eventually right? I don’t hate Lee Anne, but in comparison with the rest, I’d rather see her go than anyone else.

11. Lisa Fernandes- Lisa continues to cook good food, but not great food. I just never feel very excited by what she’s making, and I don’t think the judges are either. In a challenge about art and paintings, it was a bit of a misfire if your dish is being compared to a brunch hash.

10. Karen Akunowicz- Last week, I praised Karen’s risk taking. This week, I don’t think I saw the same Karen. She seemed flustered, hard on herself, not very confident. She needs to bounce back, because she had a good quick-fire dish, so I still feel she has the potential to do really well.

9. Jennifer Carroll- Jen keeps making good food, but her food may be getting a bit TOO simple. “Just fish and sauce” isn’t the best review for a dish that could’ve been so much more. I like Jen and think she’s still one of the better chefs in the kitchen, I just don’t know if she continues making this “safe” food, if she’ll last much longer. She’s gonna need to dig deeper.

8. Kevin Gillespie- Kevin’s quick fire dish was awesome, and his third win this season. So why is he so low? The judges basically told him he’d be in big risk to go home if he didn’t have immunity. Kevin is so interesting, because it seems like he’s either been the winner of a challenge, or one of the worst. He hasn’t ever landed in the middle. If Kevin nails a dish, he’s great. But if he doesn’t, he REALLY misfires. I can only hope he tanked because he had immunity and bit off a bit more than he could chew…but it makes me a little worried considering this is the 2nd time he’s been singled out in an elimination challenge as being one of the worst of the night.

7. Stephanie Cmar- Stephanie was in the bottom again, but only because Gregory and Melissa’s dishes were so good. Stephanie didn’t have many flaws except a tad undercooked pasta. Her dish was honestly really good, so I have no shame putting her higher than she was last week!

6. Nini Nguyen- Nini is getting more positive reviews of her cooking (we’ll ignore the abysmal watermelon fried rice quick fire dish), and I think she’s improving each week. She wasn’t on the top for her team (Malarkey nailed it), but her dish was very inspiring and tied into her New Orleans culture. I really enjoyed how she attached her dish to a personal story. I thought maybe Jamie was the underdog to look out for, but at this point, I think it’s Nini.

5. Brian Malarkey- Brian redeemed himself, as this challenge definitely fell right into his lap. Do I think he’s a top contender yet? Probably not. But for this specific challenge, he nailed it, and I think this was his best cooking yet.

4. Gregory Gordet- Gregory in the four spot? I wish he could go higher, but I had to give credit where credit is due. He still nailed his dish, and remains one of the most consistent top contenders this season. I love Gregory and think he’s only getting better as time goes on. He’s always one of the most exciting chefs to watch, and I definitely look forward to seeing what he’s gonna make.

3. Bryan Voltaggio- Bryan continues to be one of the top contenders, really nailing his snapper dish, and landing in the top again. While I think Eric and Melissa outcooked him this week, I still think he’s right up there toward the top with the rest of them. If LeBron doesn’t score the most points of the night, he’s still probably the best player.

2. Eric Adjepong- Eric was on the bottom last week, but has since recovered and started to dominate this week, being on top of both the quick fire and elimination challenge. He didn’t win either of them, but did a great job this week, and reestablished himself as a front-runner.

1. Melissa King- Melissa won the night for me. She not only made a lovely lobster wonton soup, but Ludo said that it was a Michelin-starred dish that belongs in HIS restaurant. That is crazy, and one of the highest compliments of the season. I think Melissa is emerging as one of the early front-runners. Last week, she was able to be adaptable and this week, she showed the confidence needed, and it paid off. Cooking against Stephanie and Gregory, who also put up amazing dishes, and still pulling off the win? Impressive.

I wanna put Kevin and Jen much higher, but I think they definitely took a bit of a dip this week, as did Karen. I am glad that Melissa finally emerged as a deep frontrunner, and Eric, Bryan, and Gregory continue upholding their legacies in the Top Chef kitchen. Even Brian Malarkey improved this week. Who didn’t improve and consistently lands in the bottom? Lee Anne.

PREDICTIONS:

Going Home- Lee Anne Wong
