Survivor S39 Power Rankings (Finals)

It’s a shame that what happened happened so late in the game. Forever, we will look back at season 39 as the season where sexual misconduct was not handled properly until the final six, and was only handled because it involved a crew member, not another contestant. People may look back at the season as the season with Sandra and Rob as mentors, but considering they’ll be back next season for Winners at War and the fact that the most likely winner (Tommy) will not have even GONE to Island of the Idols until the finale makes this season a pretty big misfire. The most likable contestants of the season, Elaine and Janet, salvaged a bit of it, but considering Elaine’s boot episode was overshadowed by Dan’s exit and Janet will most likely be sent home because Dean flipped heads in a coin toss, I don’t think it’s possible to take many positives away from this season, except for a few fun pre-merge boots, but at the cost of some great personalities. Oh well, the finale is here, and we still must rank the five we have left. If Dean screws up this nullifier twist, then I think we could have a REALLY interesting finish, but if everything predictable goes as planned, then I don’t think it’ll be any more than a forgettably generic finale, and a reunion show that I’m sure nobody is looking forward to.

5. Janet Carbin- SUPER MOM is going home because of a coin toss. She found the idol (yay!), but Dean saw her. Dean flipped a coin, it landed on heads, and he got an idol nullifier. It seems pretty obvious that Janet will try to play an idol, and Dean will nullify it. It’s a shame, because without the nullifier, Janet wins the game. She uses her idol, and in final four, she either wins immunity or wins fire making (who could beat her?). If Janet is in the final three, she wins in a landslide. Part of me REALLY wants to see Dean screw up this idol nullifier, and Janet to pull it off. This is the only way I will consider ever rewatching the season again or talking positively about it. I hope she gets another chance to compete, because she really is an amazing player, and it’s a shame that a last-minute advantage will likely be her seal of fate. Janet, my heart is with you. I think all of America’s is.

4. Lauren Beck- Lauren has probably played the best strategic game of anyone this season, but even then, she hasn’t really created the right social bonds to become the most liked by anyone, so her only chance of winning is if she’s sitting against Dean and Noura, because I truly think Tommy is well liked by the jury in comparison. Within this final four, Lauren is going to NEED to win immunity, or she’s toast. If Dean wins immunity, he’ll take Noura to the end, and Tommy beats Lauren in fire. If Noura wins immunity, she’ll probably take Dean to the end, and Tommy still beats Lauren in fire. If Tommy wins immunity, this is where it could get interesting, but Tommy knows he can’t sit next to her, and would likely have Dean make fire against Lauren, resulting in Lauren probably still losing. Lauren’s only shot of making it to the end is winning immunity, and even then, she probably doesn’t win if Tommy beats either Dean or Noura in fire. Poor Lauren had everything going her way, but now that the playing field cut so quickly from six to five, her options are limited and it looks like she’ll be the player coming just short of the final three.

3. Dean Kowalski- Dean will likely make it to final three, and it’s hard for me to believe that he’ll get any votes. If he makes a big move against Janet, it may garner some respect, but the thing with Dean is that he spent a lot of the game not being liked by too many people and being a bit of a loner. Unlike Noura, who tried to infiltrate her way into an alliance, Dean just sat back and hoped to be used as a vote, and the only social bond we really saw was with Kellee. I just don’t see Dean pulling it off, and while I admire his underdog story, I just can’t accept Dean being the winner of the season. It’s a shame we never got to see Dean play Jamal’s fake advantage at final six and look like an idiot once again…oh well, maybe he’ll whip it out at final three, and Jamal will confirm once and for all that both of his legacy advantages are fake.

2. Noura Salman- Noura doesn’t seem like a contender for the win, but the only reason I have her in the second spot is A) she will DEFINITELY make it to the final three and B) Sandra predicted that a female will win the game, and by the looks of it, Janet and Lauren’s chances are slim. Could Noura pull this out? Or are we going to have a male winner for the first time since season 34? Whoever plays the best game deserves to win, in my opinion, but it’s about time we have another female take it all. If Noura wins, it’ll definitely be an underdog win, and I think she’s actually played a great game in terms of physically winning challenges, and also finding her way from the bottom to the top. The only thing is that she is so unpredictable, and therefore, people think she’s a very chaotic player, and I just don’ see enough people rewarding her the million for that.

1. Tommy Sheehan- Tommy probably has this in the bag. His edit has been consistent, as he’s gotten positive confessionals, and seems to be one of the people who has lots of connections socially. I don’t think his strategic game is very good, as he’s almost gone home a ton of times, but he’s made the social bonds required to get people to save his skin when he’s in danger. If Tommy is sitting there with Dean and Noura, I think he’ll win. If Janet or Lauren is there, it’ll be a tougher battle, and I think Janet wins over him. This finale is going to be pretty predictable if Tommy makes it there, but him being a boring winner has nothing to do with his gameplay, just the way it was edited. I’m hoping for a surprise but pretty sure Tommy will be the one walking away with the win.

As I said, it would be insanely entertaining if Janet doesn’t go home via idol nullifier, because it means that the predictability is finally gone. I do think the most predictable final three is either Tommy or Lauren with the combo of Dean/Noura. I just see Tommy winning fire over Lauren. For this reason, I think Noura could get some votes from people wanting to award a female winner, but I truly think Tommy seems to be the most obvious winner at this point. If anything, I’m most looking forward to the preview for next season. Bring on season 40.
