America's Got Talent S14 Power Rankings (Quarterfinals, Week 2)

Aug 21, 2019 by PowerRankings101
imageThis group was pretty strong going in, but some acts disappointed. I have to say, it totally ended better than it started, with Ryan Neimiller kicking it into gear, and the following 5 acts of the night joining him alongside as the best 6 of the night. Everything that led up to it was underwhelming or disappointing, so expect these rankings to feel very split down the middle.

12. The Sentimentalists- This was one of the worst acts I’ve seen on the show. At least Nick & Lindsay put something memorable and almost hilariously bad up. This was just unrehearsed, seemed awkward, and full of mistakes. The woman couldn’t guess things correctly, the man seemed to try way too hard to cover up his mistakes only to get annoyed at Howie, the only saving grace being his eating. It was a mess from the start when Gabrielle’s cinnamon candy was called bubble gum, and the mentalists didn’t know the difference between a regular cream filled cone pastry and a cannoli.

11. Marina Mazepa- I really like the scariness and eeriness she brings, but this was a huge step down, and I agree with Simon that this act was a bit boring. Maybe it’s the fact that there was so much production design and extra dancers added. I really don’t know why it fell so flat for me, but I’m hoping she can at least get a second shot maybe to redeem herself. She seems most likely to redeem herself over some of the other acts that had some duds.

10. Charlotte Summers- I’m sorry, but Charlotte’s vocal wasn’t that great tonight. Her voice itself is good, but there were pitch problems galore, and I really don’t think she did herself any favors, especially with other amazing kids performing tonight. I was disappointed, but I like her as a human being and I think her voice has potential. Song choice just hurt her.

9. Nick & Lindsay- This is an interesting placement. Why aren’t they at the bottom? Heck, why are they in the top 10 of the night? Well….I have never been so entertained. It was SO bad, it was good… and I would love to see them get that seventh spot just for giggles. He won’t. But wouldn’t that be something?

8. Robert Finley- This was definitely the most I’ve liked Robert, but I still don’t seem to connect with the singing itself. His passion and message are great, but I just don’t see America responding to him the way the judges do. I think this is the end of the road for him.

7. Chris Klafford- I like Chris, and felt like the show would give him a further push later in the night. Alas, I was wrong, because he went pretty early in the night, and I think that’s why he might be in some trouble. I do think his voice is really good, but it was a step down from his last act. I hope he can get another shot, because I do believe there’s a contender in there.

6. Light Balance Kids- I like these kids, and I think what they do from a technical standpoint is impressive. The actual dancing itself isn’t too impressive, and I think I agree that they could’ve gone a lot bigger in spectacle. Regardless, this was a pretty great act and I think they’ll move forward.

5. Ndlovu Youth Choir- I really don’t think these guys are as good as the judges would like us to believe, but in a night where top dogs underperformed, some people got buzzers, and people became forgotten, these kids stood out. I think there’s a lot of room to grow, but I think America will give them another shot, as they deserve. I like them and think their passion and enthusiasm speaks for itself.

4. Joseph Allen- Was his song better than his first? No. But I still dug it, and think the emotional connection to his parents was heartwarming to see. I don’t think it needed to be anything too soulful or sad, but could just emanate pure pride and joy, which I think it did. I love his style, and love his personality, and hope they give him a shot.

3. Tyler Butler-Figueroa- He stepped it up big time. Better showmanship. Better song choice. Better skills shown. I think Tyler is only getting better, and I’d love to see him get more chances to impress us. I love Tyler and love his fighting spirit. He’s a good kid, and an equally great talent. He’ll likely steal so many hearts tonight.

2. Ryan Neimiller- It’s been a while since a comedian has knocked it out of the park like this (not counting Preacher on Champions, because he’s unmatched). Ryan is so unique, not just because of his humor on his disability, but his writing itself. It feels family friendly, but just mature enough to relate to every type of audience member. I’m such a huge fan, and I hope America agrees. He didn’t need a golden buzzer to get where he is, and that’s at the top of the pack.

1. V. Unbeatable- The name speaks for itself. Unbeatable. They are unmatched in energy, in height, in passion. I love it so much. It doesn’t need spectacle. The heart is the spectacle, and I think a lot of people will be on board with these guys as I, and the judges, are. I can’t wait to see them (hopefully) make the finals. I think they have a real shot.

The safe bets are surely Tyler, V. Unbeatable, and Ryan. As for who is next, I think we’ll see the Youth Choir and Light Balance Kids make it for their wide-ranged appeal to all ages and types of interests (singing, dancing, lights, spectacle, passion, etc.). Joseph, being a golden buzzer, probably stands a really good shot too, and I can see him getting that Dunkin’ Save. As for who the final spot goes to, I think Charlotte has enough fans, Robert has an emotional story, and Chris has the previous performances to back them up for a possible spot. I’m gonna say it comes down to Charlotte and Robert, and Robert gets that spot.

PREDICTIONS:

Going Through- Tyler Butler-Figueroa, V. Unbeatable, Ryan Neimiller, Ndlovu Youth Choir, Light Balance Kids, Joseph Allen, and Robert Finley

Going Home- Charlotte Summers, Chris Klafford, The Sentimentalists, Nick & Lindsay, and Marina Mazepa
