American Idol S17 Power Rankings (Finals)

May 24, 2019 by PowerRankings101
imageI won’t say I’m surprised that Laine won. I’m happy Madison got third. I wanted Alejandro to win, but I think he’ll have a much more successful career and already has the best performance of the season in his back pocket from the very start *cough* the audition. Laine’s debut single was quite good, but here is a ranking of all the competitive songs of the night (Laine and Alejandro’s three, Madison’s two).

8. Madison VanDenburg (2nd Song)- Madison’s pitchiness was back for the worst performance of the night, but still pretty fine compared to her other stuff the past few weeks. Third place was as good as she could do all season, and this was proof that she wasn’t going to be the Idol, but I still do think she could do well singing her own songs that keep her right on pitch.

7. Laine Hardy (1st Song)- This night was always Laine vs. Alejandro, but I think Laine actually supplied some of his weakest vocals of the competition tonight. Not that they were bad, but they were very standard for Laine, and I would’ve liked to see him go bigger and bolder in his choices. His first song was no exception. Good, but nothing that wowed me at the end of the day. Take me “Home” was a good segue to hometown visits, but nothing beyond that.

6. Laine Hardy (2nd Song)- This vocal from Laine wasn’t really a standout to me, but still a lot of fun. It was the standard Party with a Hardy, just a little cleaner and more sophisticated, which I appreciated. Much better than his first round.

5. Madison VanDenburg (1st Song)- Madison actually nailed it, and while there were a FEW pitchy notes (her Achilles heel all season), she did do well with this song. The thing missing was her lyrical connection. The song’s lyrics felt a little bit mature for her, and the replacement of “no” instead of “oh” bothered me, but otherwise, well done! Thank god she didn’t sing the Whitney song.

4. Laine Hardy (3rd Song)- While Laine was consistent in what Laine does well, this third song was the only time I was really impressed by Laine’s vocals in this round. A reprise of one of this best all season, it was good to see Laine win on a high note, and while his finale victory song was better than anything he sang all night before that, this was still better than anything Madison did, and ALMOST as good as Alejandro’s weakest (which was still superior).

3. Alejandro Aranda (1st Song)- I’m always here for Alejandro’s original songs, and this was one of the best of the night. I loved his simpler vocal. It was simple, acoustic, gorgeous, eerie, soft, warming, and heart-felt. The vocals themselves were almost so simple, I don’t know how it compares with others in that respect, but the songwriting ability and actual connection to lyrics is what won him round one. This is a song I could listen to in a radio on a long car ride on a rainy day. Gorgeous.

2. Alejandro Aranda (2nd Song)- Alejandro got even better on his second song. I liked the first song better as a SONG in itself, but this song was gorgeous in its own right, and a more impressive PERFORMANCE. He just upped it and upped it, and the fact that he did so well on the finale just makes me sadder and sadder that he isn’t going to be alongside Cook, Sparks, Phillips, Allen, Underwood, and Clarkson on the Idol Winner Greats List.

1. Alejandro Aranda (3rd Song)- My favorite performance of the season was Alejandro’s audition. He reprised it here, and it was nothing short of perfect. I just wish it could go on and on and on. “Out Loud” is the song of the season, and I am so happy he got to go out on such a great song, written by Alejandro himself, a true artist and future legend. The most memorable audition since William Hung, and something I don’t think anyone will ever forget. This song is perfection, and Alejandro is just the best. I love it. Congrats on being Idol’s greatest runner-up since Lambert, and the true winner in my book.
