I was a bigger fan of the second episode than I’ve been a fan of any episode in a long time. Three reasons. One, we saw a shake up in the Survivor, Big Brother, and Race teams in the fact that it wasn’t just Amazing Race dominating the top of the leaderboard. We saw Vic & Nicole get 2nd, Rachel & Elissa got 3rd and Janelle & Britney got 5th. Overall, good mix. Second, I love how the U-turn shook things up a bit but didn’t ultimately send anyone packing. I hate when it’s obvious that the team who gets U-turned goes home. I think it just showed how tough Becca & Floyd and Tyler & Korey are, to complete two tasks and outlast teams and still stick around. Amazing. Third reason why I loved this episode, the culture! I got chills seeing the line of monks, and then even more chills with the elephants. That’s the beauty of Amazing Race. An amazing episode, if you will.
9. Corinne & Eliza (Friends; Survivor)- I know Corinne & Eliza got 6th in this leg, but I can’t think that they’re necessarily front-runners. Even when the had a first place lead, they blew it. Corinne was very wise in pairing context picture clues with the Laos alphabet. It helped them kill that task, but without a U-turn, I think they would’ve ended up in 8th or 9th tonight, so I don’t necessarily think they’re as strong as we’d like to believe (or hope to believe). Don’t get me wrong, I love them. But they seem like the team that’s sticking out as the one that is most vulnerable to go after their first leg and the end of their second leg.
8. Chris & Bret (Friends; Survivor)- It hurts me to put the Survivors at the bottom again, but it’s true. Chris & Bret are good, but not great. They’re not keeping up with the big guys, and it worries me for the future. They’re also probably getting the least amount of airtime, which is never fun in a competition show. Any competition show, people want to have favorites to root for.
7. Janelle & Britney (Friends; Big Brother)- Janelle & Britney manage to stay in the pack, but somehow haven’t been standing out to me yet. I feel like, next to Chris & Bret, I’ve been seeing the least of them. Maybe this means they’ll go further, or maybe it means they just won’t be able to win it in the end. I like them, but don’t really see any indication of them being contenders in the very end of the race.
6. Becca & Floyd (Friends; The Amazing Race)- Becca definitely struggled with that elephant, but you have to commend them for being able to complete both tasks of that U-turn to utter precision. They work really well together, and without a U-turn, they could be in that top 5 of this week, which is why they’re right below the top 5 in this ranking, rather than 9th.
5. Tyler & Korey (YouTuber Friends; The Amazing Race)- Similar to Becca & Floyd, they were able to make the U-turn a momentum booster for them, and while they’re still leaving 7th from the pit-stop, they have a lot going for them. This could’ve been the week to take them out, and it wasn’t. They killed absolutely every aspect of this week, so I think they’ll be super tough to beat in the end if they make it there.
4. Rachel & Elissa (Sisters; Big Brother & The Amazing Race)- I love Rachel & Elissa, but we have to remember the key scene that happened in the beginning. Becca & Floyd decided to work with Nicole & Vic instead, and Rachel & Elissa U-turned them. While this could’ve be bad news for Becca & Floyd, Team Fun was able to turn it around, and if this season has any poetic justice, Rachel & Elissa’s U-turn will come back to bite them and they could just end up going home soon. Right now, they’re ahead of the pack, but don’t be surprised if Team Fun outlasts them in the end.
3. Colin & Christie (Life Partners; The Amazing Race)- I do have to go back and watch videos on Colin & Christie because I just can’t see why they’re so darn compelling. But getting 2nd then 4th ain’t too shabby, which is why I have them this high. I hope I start to like them more.
2. Nicole & Victor (Dating; Big Brother)- Nicole is way tougher than she lets on. We knew this from Big Brother, but when the competition is 75% physical and mental (not social or strategic), it’s also great to see Nicole excel in that. Nicole made a mistake in believing the Afghanimals when they said she was going the wrong way, but she said she’d never let that mistake happen again. I truly believe she’ll never let that happen again, and she’ll be able to toughen up even more. Victor is also so supportive of Nicole, it’s a delight to see. I think they’re going to be our dark horses to win amongst these strong Race teams.
1. Leo & Jamal (Cousins; The Amazing Race)- Two legs in a row, these guys deserve the top spot again. Despite what some previews have of them having an argument in the next one, it’s bound to happen at some point, and I don’t think this diminishes the fact that they are the biggest threats through and through.
The Survivors are on the bottom yet again (sigh, couldn’t you get Joe & Sierra or even bring back Rob & Amber?). Between the two, Chris & Bret have more potential for a comeback, while Corinne & Eliza seem to be good tv quality, but have only really impressed me in one challenge, which is why I think they’ll be out sooner than the rest.
