America's Got Talent: The Champions Power Rankings (Round 1)

Jan 12, 2019 by PowerRankings101
imageThe first night of AGT: The Champions is among us, and while we will be getting result each night, I will still rank the acts based on my own preference. Obviously, there will be no prediction for elimination, but I may leave some insight at the end for how I feel the advancing contestants will fare in the endgame. This is so exciting to see so many great acts back together again, and it will definitely be some of the greatest talent we’ve seen on this show!

10. Justice Crew- I don’t know if they were a dance troupe or a singing group, or both. But either way, while fun as they might be, they showed the least of the night in terms of talent and ability. I’m sure they’re really entertaining in a live setting, but I think AGT has definitely seen better dancing and clearly better vocals. I have to commend them though for being able to come across seas and bring so much energy. But for me, they were probably the weakest of the night (and on a GREAT night, that is).

9. Vicki Barbolak- On her season, she stood out as one of the strongest, but on a night with all of these champions, her act seemed to blend in with the rest rather than stand-out. I think she has a hilarious energy and delivers some great jokes here and there. I just think her set was too short to really dive in to any true comedic gold. I do love Vicki though, and I’m glad she was a part of this gathering of champs.

8. Alex Magala- When the judges said “Is that it?” halfway through, I was thinking the same thing, expecting to put him at the bottom of my list. He just didn’t impress me enough. But once he did the death drop at the end, he shot up a few spots in the rankings. The whole first half, as I mentioned, was unimpressive to me, but the second half was actually stunning and scary, and I think he sold it best right there. I probably still prefer Uzeyer’s fun-loving energy over his darker one (and Uzeyer’s first half was better than his), but both did great stunts that had me holding my breath.

7. Uzeyer Novruzov- While definitely not the best act of the night, Uzeyer redeemed himself from a scary fall years back. His smaller ladder stuff is so much fun, and his tall ladder stuff is death-defyingly terrifying. I’m happy we got to see his fun loving spirit once again, and I will always enjoy watching this guy perform.

6. Sara and Hero- Sara and Hero are just adorable and make me smile through and through. Dog acts always touch my heart, and they are incredibly synchronized and great story-tellers. There is obviously a way they could be bigger and better, but for what it was, I couldn’t help but love every ounce of it.

5. The Clairvoyants- These two are amazing. I saw them on Broadway in NYC and absolutely loved them then too. I think they brought their usual whimsy and trickery to the judges’ table. While the buildup took a bit long, I think it was much better in a live setting, and they absolutely rocked it when it came time for the grand finale. The spray paint on the top of the building? Wild. They are great!

4. Sofie Dossi- Sofie is easily the best of her type of act, and got overshadowed in her past season by loads of singers and other more “usual” acts. Sofie is a master show-person, and puts on a spectacular show. She has grown so much and stepped it up by a mile. One of the most dazzling acts of the night. Amazingly good.

3. Susan Boyle- Susan Boyle has defined what Got Talent is and has become. It was no surprise to me that she got the golden buzzer, and it was well deserved. She has such a pure voice, and such a warm and humble soul. I’m glad we get to see more of her, especially since I didn’t have the luxury of seeing her week after week in Britain. She’s a champion, for sure, and I’m so happy to see her back and sounding lovely as always.

2. Bianca Ryan- Damn. Bianca was the first ever AGT winner, and I expected that her voice may have phased out since she first appeared on the show, but boy was I wrong. Bianca can sing the music of angels. Powerful in her belt, but beautifully soulful in the restraint, she is absolutely kicking things off to a miraculous high. I love her and think her voice is absolutely mind-blowing. Best version of “Say Something” I may have ever heard.

1. Preacher Lawson- I’ll admit…if you look back into the depths of my rankings, I was super hard on Preacher and didn’t love his material. But this time, Preacher came out with one of the best comedic routines I’ve seen in the history of the show. Preacher was absolutely hilarious and brought so much personality, energy, and confidence to the stage. Every single joke landed, and I honestly think they saved the best of the night for last. Hire this guy on SNL or some tv show NOW! He is incredible.

Well, it seems like the 50 States seemed to agree with me, as my top 4 was also the top 4 of the judges/America. I am so happy that Preacher made it through, as he was my favorite of the night, though I wish there was room for Bianca Ryan to make it as well. It was a great first night, and I only think it’ll get better. Let’s hope!

Advanced: Susan Boyle and Preacher Lawson
