America's Got Talent S13 Power Rankings (Quarterfinals, Week 1)

Aug 15, 2018 by PowerRankings101
imageA new live season of AGT is upon us! After weeks of great auditions and judge cuts, we have a top 36 and are going to see them shaved down to 22 (I think) by the end of this  round (7 + 7 + 7 + wild card). I’m happy we get to see Daniel Emmett come back as a wildcard, though it would have been nice to see Jeffrey Li, Angel Garcia, Oliver Graves, Troy James, or Sergey and Sasha as the final two wildcard acts instead of Human Fountains and the group who didn’t even perform at Judge Cuts. Ah well. Here we are. It’ll be an exciting one. Let’s rank the first twelve Quarterfinalists!

12. Human Fountains- I’m with Simon on this one… I thought it was pretty bad. It’s a funny gimmick the first time, but there were so many other wild cards there could’ve been. The hot dog bit was creative for their act, but I don’t find their act very compelling. Sigh. What a wasted spot.

11. The PAC Dance Team- The only act in contention with Human Fountains for least deserving Quarterfinalist. They should not have made it this far, and while they’re good, I just don’t think their material is exciting enough or advanced enough to be too memorable. It feels childish, which makes sense because they’re kids, but on a grand scale like this, it doesn’t work.

10. Mochi- What Mochi does is definitely full of talent, but I think diabolo just isn’t my thing. It feels like something we’ve seen before, and while he definitely kicked it up a notch from previous performances, I don’t know if this reads as well on tv than it does live.

9. Angel City Chorale- So many people sing the song “This Is Me,” I actually thought this choir had already done it. And honestly, it wasn’t a very great version of it. I will say, their passion and performance is why they’re memorable and why they might have a shot here. I liked the colors, the band added some flare, and the movement was fun. I think Howie is right that it’s different watching it live than on television. We’ll have to see.

8. Lord Nil- I don’t think it needed to be buzzed, but I do think it was less impressive than his past escapes. It seemed a little over the top, and the snakes weren’t nearly as high stakes as I thought and became forgotten about halfway through the act. There needed to be one more layer, and I don’t quite know what that could be, but it needed something.

7. Junior New System- A way better dance group than PAC Dance Team, but I do think the heels are the most important part of their act, so I think they should utilize them more. I did enjoy their act and think they have some serious potential.

6. Amanda Mena- Amanda had some shaky and pitchy moments, and I don’t think this song necessarily shows off her voice enough, but there’s a natural talent there that is infectious. Her voice is so good and she exudes confidence. Mel B probably won’t have the winner in her golden buzzer this year like she did last year, but she did pick a true talent.

5. Vicki Barbolak- Vicki is utterly hilarious. I didn’t laugh out loud as hard as earlier routines of hers, but I did chuckle at almost everything. Her writing is really clever and she really needs to advance because I think the competition needs someone funny like her in it.

4. Flau’jae- Flau’jae isn’t just a great writer, but now she’s growing into a great artist. Her material is always great, and this one sounded the most marketable of all her past raps. She really is talented and amazing and I can’t wait to see what she does next.

3. We Three- My favorite audition of the year, I was so excited to see these guys return with another amazing song. I wasn’t as on board with this song as their others, BUT I still think they are some of the most talented ones of the mix. They will certainly have a career because they write catchy music that has incredible resonant and powerful lyrics. One of my favorites of the night, and still my favorite act in this whole season. Rooting for them.

2. Courtney Hadwin- Courtney is just so so unique. Her dancing is amazing, her spirit is fascinating, and when she belts, she is just AWESOME. The growling is great but sometimes in the falsetto, the pitch falters a bit. Other than that, I think she is a true star and has incredible potential. This could be the next Darci Lynn who literally storms through the competition without any worry. It may be hard to stop her.

1. Shin Lim- The best act of the night. I don’t know how the hell he does it. There’s obviously a trick, but I am fine sitting back and believing that it’s real magic. He is truly a close up magic expert and he also knows how to put on a show with no words and a small playspace. It was truly incredible.

Can we just have a final between Shin and Courtney right now? I love We Three, Flau’jae, and Vicki as well. Between those 5, we should establish some semifinalists. The other two spots are up for grabs, and I think we can rule PAC, Human Fountains, and probably Mochi (just because he went first and was a bit forgettable) out. This means it’ll be between Amanda, Junior New System, Lord Nil, and Angel City. Lord Nil’s buzz probably takes him down a few pegs and could be the nail in his coffin. I think Angel City has enough YouTube buzz and Amanda has raw natural talent, but then there’s Junior New System who really brought it with their dancing. I think Amanda goes through and the judges choose between Angel City and Junior New System. By the sound of it, I think Angel City would go through.

PREDICTIONS:

Going Through- Shin Lim, Courtney Hadwin, We Three, Flau’jae, Vicki Barbolak, Amanda Mena, and Angel City Chorale

Eliminated- The PAC Dance Team, Human Fountains, Mochi, Lord Nil, and Junior New System

Personally, I'd like to see Shin, Courtney, Flau'jae, Vicki, Amanda, Junior New System, and We Three go through. I think the Angel City Chorale is annoying and they literally copied the kids choir with that song.

I agree except I think JNS will be safe and ACC will be out

Wow what a shocker. Flau'jae didn't even have a chance for the save! I am so disappointed
