Top 10 Tuesdays: Top 10 Live Action Disney Movies

Aug 7, 2018 by PowerRankings101
imageWith Christopher Robin coming out, I decided to rank the top ten live action Disney films (not including Muppets, Marvel, or Star Wars as they are other properties that were later bought by Disney. Disney Channel Original Movies do not count, but HSM3 does because it had a theatrical release).

Honorable Mentions: I’m probably forgetting a bunch, but…
Maleficent, Ice Princess, The Princess Diaries 2, The Haunted Mansion, The Santa Clause, Mary Poppins

10. Cinderella (2015)- As if it wasn’t obvious with my Mamma Mia top 10 a few blogs back, I’m a huge Lily James fan. She is a very good actress, and was great in this. I also remember this movie because of a very special person I saw this movie with. For her, I include this on the list.

9. Beauty and the Beast (2017)- The original songs, meh.  Some casting, meh. But the magic of it was so real, especially on a big screen, and those timeless songs and characters just provide so much entertainment and love. It’s irresistible really.

8. Into the Woods- A stage musical that wasn’t adapted perfectly, but enjoyable enough to keep me invested. Meryl Streep, James Corden, Lilla Crawford, and Anna Kendrick were absolutely great, and Chris Pine and Johnny Depp took it the extra mile with their roles. Pure spooky fun.

7. High School Musical 3: Senior Year- HSM was so successful that they brought it to the big screen and boy was it a blast. An absolute blast. I loved it and still consider it one of my biggest guilty pleasures.

6. Pete’s Dragon (2016)- I saw this right before I left for college, so it definitely resonated for me and my parents more than it would have with anyone else at any other time of their life. I was watching a story about love and family with my parents for the last time before moving away for some months. It was a beautiful moviegoing experience, and will always hold a special place in my heart.

5. The Jungle Book (2016)- Wow I love this movie. So well crafted, designed, and extremely well cast. I ate up every bit of scenery and if only the kid playing Mowgli acted better, this could have been a top 10 film of 2016 for me.

4. Sky High- Remember this gem? Not many people do, but it was a cheesy teenage superhero flick. Before the MCU, before The Dark Knight, we had this. And it was one of my favorite of the genre during my childhood. Gotta love that final shot too.  You know the one.

3. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe- This movie held the title for my favorite film for a point. Just absolutely marvelous in its visuals and world building. I felt like I was stepping into a storybook myself. There was no greater epic to me than Narnia, and I went on to be in a stage version and rent out a whole movie theatre for my birthday party to watch the sequel, “Prince Caspian.” Unfortunately, the sequel sucked. But we at least have this one to remember.

2. Saving Mr. Banks- Oh boy, let the tears flow. I was never a huge Mary Poppins fan, as I just never got attached to it as a kid.  But this film was absolutely breathtaking. From the honest performance of Emma Thompson as PL Travers or the charm of Tom Hank’s Walt Disney. This was the perfect film to watch in December 2013 with snow on the ground and Christmas cheer on the horizon. I love this movie.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl- THE live action movie that set Disney above the bar. Disney was no longer just an animated powerhouse. No longer was Pirates of the Caribbean a silly little ride at the parks. This film was a mega hit, and while it isn’t even my favorite film on this list, it’s impossible to deny the importance of this film. I love everything this film stands for and everything it brought to the genre. Gore Verbinski is the man, and you need to check out more of his work. Until then, yo ho!
