Here are my rankings of the new contestants of this season of Food Network Star. Since we won’t know whether Amy, Jernard, Yaku, Adam, or Sarah will be returning into the game (my guess is on either Yaku, Amy, or Adam), I will put the returnee in the anonymous 2 spot (since this group is very promising).
12. Christian Petroni- Christian is the resident Italian chef from NYC, and claims to have a larger than life personality. I just don’t get much of a winner vibe from him and think he could be someone who cracks under the pressure. Just a first impression though.
11. Jason Goldstein- We just saw a Jason win last year. But don’t expect back to back Jason winners. His signature dishes of cheesy meatballs or bacon-infused burgers don’t sound too appetizing, nor unique. I think he’ll have great personality to take him a round or two, but I just don’t see him as a contender.
10. Jessica Tom- The thing that struck me most about Jessica was her Ivy League background and intelligence. Odd that that was the striking detail for a food competition? You have to remember that half of the competition is on camera work, and people who are too polished or rehearsed often struggle. Jessica comes across as someone who will be way too rehearsed and will need to just be natural and warm in order to relate to viewers the way Food Network needs.
9. Palak Patel- Though I don’t like Indian food, I think Palak brings a lot of knowledge and expertise to the competition. I could see her going deep for her unique POV and experience. Whether she is a natural on camera will determine how well she’ll really do.
8. Chris Valdes- Chris has the passion, for sure. I think he is going to be extremely likable, but I don’t know if he is experienced enough. Sure, he’s been cooking from a young age, but he’s fresh out of culinary school and has a catering company. We haven’t seen him in the big leagues yet, so it’ll be nice to see how he does.
7. Manny Washington- I watched Manny on MasterChef, where he didn’t really do too well. But if you look at Eddie Jackson, another MasterChef alum, some people are better suited for a less intense cooking competition. MasterChef is all presentation above food, and for Manny, that may work in his favor.
6. Rebekah Lingenfelser- Rebekah is going to be a fan favorite I bet. She seems to be someone who is really warm and lovable, and someone I think people will root for.
5. Samone Lett- Samone probably has the most fascinating story of all the contestants, going from a member of the military to culinary school, all while fighting to prove women can do it all. She’s someone I’d love to see do well.
4. Harrison Bader- Harrison was the first person who struck me as star material based on the way he carries himself and the way he has hustled so far in his food career. He is the same age as fellow contestant Chris, but seems much more mature and poised for the competition. Could be a frontrunner.
3. Update- Since there are two Comeback winners, they'll be in the 2 and 3 spot.
2. Comeback Kitchen Winner- I don’t think Sarah or Jernard will return, but between the three (Adam, Amy, Yaku) that I think will, I think any of them could win. If Adam’s in, I think he takes it all. Yaku is hit or miss, but has been doing well in Comeback Kitchen. And then there’s Amy who seems to be most improved, and who I’d root for to win easily. I won’t put them in the top spot just because history has shown with Matthew Grunwald and Martita Jara that Comeback Kitchen winners haven’t made the finale, but this does seem like the most promising of any year.
1. Katie Dixon- My winner pick. I watched Katie on MasterChef a few seasons back (like Manny), and she was both an excellent chef and very professional and mature for a home cook. If Amy doesn’t win her way back, I can see Katie having the home cook storyline (though it seems she may own a cafe now). If Amy does come back, it’ll be a close competition between the two, and I think Katie has a great shot of winning.
So my favorites are Katie and whoever returns from Comeback Kitchen. I don’t know the others well enough, aside from maybe Manny who didn’t impress me too much in Masterchef. Who will win? Only time will tell. But based on first impressions, I could see Christian or Jason going home first.
