American Idol S16 Power Rankings (Top 7)

May 7, 2018 by PowerRankings101
imageWith the shocking elimination of Ada Vox, and some not so surprising eliminations from Michelle Sussett and Dennis Lorenzo, we are down to one wild-card pick, Jurnee, and six other awesome contenders. So who did the best on this double header Prince/Year-They-Were-Born themed week? Let’s see.

14. Catie Turner (Prince Song)- Poor Catie. She’s definitely my favorite of the pack, but she not only had a major line flub in the beginning, but it set the course for the rest of her performance. Poor girl. She was one of my favorites, and I wish she had ended with a bang.

13. Cade Foehner (Year-They-Were-Born Song)- This song definitely fit Cade’s style better than his last one. But I still am not 100% on board with Cade, and think his vocals still don’t stack up to his style. I know he’s a favorite to win, but he’s not my cup of tea.

12. Cade Foehner (Prince Song)- This was fine, but you all know my feelings on Cade. It was more on pitch than his last one though, so that’s good!

11. Gabby Barrett (Prince Song)- I think this one was missing something. It was boring at the start, and while the vocals were great as usual, it wasn’t one of Gabby’s stand out moments that we’ve seen in the past. It kicked up a notch at the end, but still didn’t feel like enough to truly wow me.

10. Michael J. Woodard (Prince Song)- Michael became one of my surprise favorites last week. This time, he took it up a notch with an up-tempo. He definitely worked the stage well, but the vocals were a bit messy for me. Pitchy in some spots, but still wildly unique and entertaining. Not his best, but not nearly the worst.

9. Jurnee (Prince Song)- This may have been the most comfortable we’ve seen Jurnee this entire competition. She had a blast and truly seemed in her element. A lot of fun to kick off the night ahead.

8. Caleb Lee Hutchinson (Year-They-Were-Born Song)- Caleb did a really good job with this. His voice is just so unique and rich, but he hadn’t been picking the right songs to showcase it. This one suited his voice really well and was probably one of the most impressive vocals we’ve heard from Caleb this season.

7. Caleb Lee Hutchinson (Prince Song)- This was actually a really cool song choice for Caleb. The song fit well for his style, and I think he finally started to define himself as more of an artist with this. Even better than his first routine, and I could safely say that Caleb was the surprise of the night for me.

6. Gabby Barrett (Year-They-Were-Born Song)- Gabby has an incredible voice. Last week, I loved her song but felt like it didn’t fit her vocal tone perfectly, but this one was perfect for her. This was yet another great moment for her.

5. Catie Turner (Year-They-Were-Born Song)- Catie is great. She has so much energy, but with that comes so much personality. She took a Britney song and made it sound unique, but never forced. It was a delight to watch, and I was enthralled all the way through.

4. Maddie Poppe (Year-They-Were-Born Song)- Maddie is absolutely killer and definitely had the best night of anyone between both songs. While her first song was my preference, she did a great job with “If It Makes You Happy” and could win this whole thing as I’ve thought many times before.

3. Maddie Poppe (Prince Song)- All six prior singers sang and did nice jobs, but then Maddie came along with her Prince song to close out the first half of the night, and she absolutely killed it. Maddie has such a unique voice, and to see her lend those vocals to a beautiful song, with some excellent piano playing to cap it off. Easily the best of the first half of the night, and one of the best of the entire night.

2. Jurnee (Year-They-Were-Born Song)- Jurnee’s song reminded me of some classic Idols like Jordin Sparks and Kelly Clarkson, who could just stand there and deliver an amazing song. Jurnee really stunned me, and this was her best routine this season. One of my favorites of this season so far PERIOD. What a performance to go out on. I hope she’s proud.

1. Michael J. Woodard (Year-They-Were-Born Song)- Wow. Michael just keeps surprising me again and again. Michael has one of the most unique voices, and always puts a spin on beloved songs, while not straying too far from the original. This was his shining moment, and I really think this kid could win it all.

Dang it, I love Jurnee and Catie Turner and think both had much more promising futures than some of the others who stuck around. But now, we’re down to five and I think Cade and Gabby are the crowd favorites. I’d love Michael and Maddie to be there, but I’m gonna go with the consensus from America.

PREDICTIONS:

Advancing to Top 3- Cade Foehner, Gabby Barrett, Maddie Poppe

Going Home- Michael J. Woodard, Caleb Lee Hutchinson
