American Idol S16 Power Rankings (Top 10)

Apr 30, 2018 by PowerRankings101
imageWe’re back with a new season of American Idol. Wow. It seems like only yesterday, I was saying goodbye to the franchise and congratulating Trent Harmon as the last Idol winner. But now, we’ll have at least one more winner. The Top 10 are here (I didn’t start with 14 because I didn’t know how everything would go down with wildcards, so now is where the power rankings start). Let’s rank these ten talented singers!

10. Michelle Sussett- Michelle has been the weakest of the pack this entire time, but I do think this was her best. I don’t think she stacks up to the rest, but she is at least improving week by week. The vocal was a bit all over the place, but she knows how to play to her strengths, which is good. She went out on her best.

9. Caleb Lee Hutchinson- The nerves were clearly evident, as Caleb still lacks some star power in his performances. But his singing is spot on and the vocals were warm and fuzzy as always. Caleb does what he does well, and there’s no other voice like his in recent Idol memory. His performance just needs to match the star power in his voice.

8. Dennis Lorenzo- Dennis gave a very simple performance, but it took a little too long to get to the true high points. He sounded nice, but if this was anywhere except for the final performance of the night, I probably would’ve forgotten about it by the end of the night. Probably why he didn’t get enough votes.

7. Cade Foehner- I like the song choice, but I don’t think the execution was perfect. I liked it at first, but it never kicked up a notch like I was expecting it to. I think Cade is so unique and I like his style for that, but vocally, his voice isn’t one of the standouts. Cade will still be one of the top contenders at the end of the day, but his performances need to have an arc and elevation to it which seemed missing. Performance though was another solid one.

6. Jurnee- Jurnee did really well vocally, and belted out those high notes with near perfection. I think she was also having lots of fun and definitely stayed connected to the song. I do think it got a bit closer to karaoke at points, but towards the middle, she kicked it up a notch and finished stronger than she started.

5. Ada Vox- Are you kidding me? How did Ada have one of the three weakest performances? As soon as I knew she was doing “Circle of Life,” my jaw dropped. What a perfect song choice. Ada rocked it, delivering exactly the performance I expected. Is that a bad thing that it was predictable? I guess it was for America. I’m so sad to see Ada go, but know that she will find success after this competition.

4. Maddie Poppe- Maddie started off the show on such a pleasant note. This is the most confident and charismatic Maddie has been all season, and I think she really came out of her shell while still sticking to what she does best. I thoroughly enjoyed her performance. Simple but so pleasant. She’s one of my dark horses to win.

3. Gabby Barrett- Gabby’s vocals are incredible. I think her country twang didn’t necessarily lend itself perfectly to the song choice, but despite that, she executed the song fantastically as always. She’s the clear front runner, and will only get better from here, which is definitely exciting. This was a solid night for her.

2. Michael J. Woodard- Wow. I was never huge on Michael, but after tonight, I’m speechless. He had a moment on stage this round, and I had goosebumps the entirety of the way through. The biggest surprise of the night for me, and one of the best of the night easily.

1. Catie Turner- I absolutely love this girl. This is the most contained we’ve seen Catie, but it was also the most stunning vocal she’s given thus far. Catie had little spurts of goofball, but this was all in all a genuinely beautiful performance. Fitting for Disney night, fitting for Catie’s personal journey on the show, and this could even be a fit for an Idol winner.

Am I upset to see Ada go? Yes. Am I upset to see Dennis go? Not really, but he got the bad performance slot. Am I upset to see Michelle go? Nope. Who advances to the top 5 next week? If I had to guess, I think Gabby, Maddie, and Cade are safe bets with Catie, Michael, and Caleb battling for those last two spots. I think Jurnee is great, but is the only wild card left (seeing other three wild-cards Ada, Michelle, and Dennis go were bad foreshadowing for Jurnee). I’m gonna put my bets on my favorites of tonight: Catie and Michael.

PREDICTIONS:

Advancing to Top 5- Gabby Barrett, Maddie Poppe, Cade Foehner, Catie Turner, and Michael J. Woodard

Going Home- Jurnee and Caleb Lee Hutchinson
