So here we go with the top 10 most surprising or shocking Idol eliminations. These are the contestants that not necessarily should have won, but definitely didn’t have a weak performance and didn’t prepare to be eliminated. It must be noted that the final 2 is not eligible for this list.
10. Jax (Season 14)- Idol started to lose lots of viewership by the end, but in a time when only one female had won the competition from a 7 season span, everyone thought Jax could do it. Unfortunately, she came just short of the finale, coming in third place, and allowing two dudes to fight it out yet again in the finale. Had Jax won, maybe the show wouldn’t have needed their Hiatus.
9. James Durbin (season 10)- Sure, there were only four people left and James wasn’t even the front-runner, but he was surely more distinct of an artist than country singers Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery were, and many thought he’d make the finals with other rocker Haley Reinhardt. Unfortunately, America wasn’t on their side.
8. Michael Johns (season 7)- A truly gifted artist that’s time was cut short after an amazing “Dream On” performance. Season 7 was one of the best, and I wish we had seen him more. Rest in Peace.
7. Tamyra Gray (season 1)- Though it was only the first season, this was still a shocker, when many considered Gray even more of a frontrunner than Kelly Clarkson. Clarkson needed to win this season, but many would think that Gray would be standing there in 2nd place.
6. Angie Miller (season 12)- In a season dominated by women, Candace Glover and Angie Miller were the obvious frontrunners. But Kree Harrison managed to find her way to the finals, giving the most innovative, original contestant of the bunch the third place boot.
5. Colton Dixon (season 11)- Colton was a frontrunner of season 11 for sure, but many thought his iconic spin on “September” was horrible. I loved that rendition, and thought that was what made Colton special. Oh well. Someone who should have gone way further.
4. Jennifer Hudson (season 3)- She was sent home way too early in a season filled with lots of big voices. But she may have had one of the best careers out of Idol, so Idol is probably just a mere memory for this successful pop culture icon.
3. Melinda Doolittle (season 6)- Melinda never had a bad performance. Ever. She was inarguably the best vocalist of the season, but lacked the star power of Jordin and the inventiveness of Blake. Looking back, I think lots of people regret giving the best singer the win.
2. Pia Toscano (season 10)- Pia’s elimination wouldn’t have been as shocking in the final 5 or 4, but because there were only 9 left and with no save on the line, this was truly gut-wrenching and heart-breaking. Pia was a powerhouse, and I still don’t know what went wrong.
1. Chris Daughtry (season 5)- This is definitely the most memorable surprise of all time. People knew Chris was going to win from the beginning. But for him to come in 4th place was truly shocking for so many people, creating controversy and perhaps changing the tone of Idol for years to come.
