In honor of the Super Bowl, here are my top 10 sports films! Let’s kickoff.
10. Caddyshack- One of the most hilarious films I’ve seen. While there are some really serious, empowering films on this list, this is just plain hilarious and awesome. Watch it if you haven’t, and head to St. Augustine, Florida to visit the themed restaurant at the World Golf Village. One of my favorites.
9. Chariots of Fire- This film hasn’t grown on me too much over the years, but as far as these sports movies go, this one has some of the best music (next to our #1 pick of course). A really powerful, inspirational film.
8. Field of Dreams- Do I cry during this film? To be honest, no. But I can see why it is so cherished by so many other people. It is a really solid movie with some emotional, powerful moments.
7. Moneyball- A film that I think is critically underrated, and I really enjoy. It shows more behind-the-scenes baseball moments, and Brad Pitt’s performance is quite fantastic and one of my favorites of his. This is also the film that made us take Jonah Hill seriously. Bravo.
6. A League of Their Own- As far as baseball movies go, this is the best. I love Tom Hanks in this, and especially the incredible cast of women, particularly Geena Davis. This has iconic dialogue, characters, and scenes that make this one of the best.
5. Miracle- There haven’t been many hockey movies made that have been successful. But this film hits all the heartstrings at the right moments. A comeback story for the books, and one of the films I revisit often.
4. Raging Bull- Don’t get me wrong, this is one of the greatest films of all time. But, I don’t think of it as a sports movie off the bat. It is more than that. A character study above all else, featuring an amazing performance from Robert DeNiro, and brilliant direction from Martin Scorsese. It’s probably the best film on this list, but for the contents of the list and the theme, I put it down here.
3. Rudy- Wanna know why everyone loves Bob in Stranger Things? Wanna know why Samwise is the heart and soul of Lord of the Rings? Because Sean Astin is a fantastic, lovable actor, and I really think he brings all he can to the character of Rudy that makes us love him from start to finish, and make us love the film all the more for it.
2. The Blind Side- Not just a great sports movie, but a beautiful mother and son relationship showcase. Sandra Bullock killed it in this role, and the writing was very well adapted from the book. The book isn’t good, but the script is full of depth and power and emotion. I love this film.
1. Rocky- How could this not top the list? Bringing on sequels, reboots, and so many fandoms, this film has it all. Great characters, an amazing musical score, great fight scenes, lovely romance, and an underdog story for the ages. My favorite sports film, and one of my favorite films period.
