Top 10 Tuesdays: Top 10 Oscar Snubs of 2018

Jan 30, 2018 by PowerRankings101
imageThis year, we got some awesome Oscar nominations. But here are the 10 biggest snubs of the ballot.

10. James Franco for “The Disaster Artist”- Because of the sexual assault allegations, I am not disappointed that he wasn’t nominated. But I am still surprised that he didn’t get nominated, considering most people’s voting ballots were submitted before the allegations were revealed. His performance was good, so it was a shock to see his name off the ballot. But oh well, Karma’s a b.

9. Martin McDonagh for Best Director- I didn’t love “Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri” like everyone else, but I was sure that McDonagh would’ve gotten a direction nomination. But he didn’t, and honestly, I’m super happy. Still a snub, but a nice snub in my opinion, considering I didn’t love the film. But McDonagh did get nominated for writing the screenplay, so I guess he got his due.

8. “The Florida Project” for Best Picture- I wouldn’t have nominated it for Best Picture, but it was definitely one of the most talked about films amongst critics and viewers alike. It had lots of early momentum, but in the end, it only picked up one nomination for Willem Dafoe in Supporting Actor.

7. Steven Spielberg in Best Director- “The Post” wasn’t my favorite, but Spielberg is always on the Academy’s radar, so to see him miss out this time really goes to show how much good competition there truly was last year.

6. Holly Hunter for Supporting Actress- Holly Hunter was one of the best parts of “The Big Sick.” While the movie was recognized for its writing, Hunter was truly a sure thing for a nomination as well, but didn’t show up on the roster when the nominees were announced.

5. “Mudbound” in Best Picture- I thought Netflix had a shot at getting in the Best Picture race, but it’ll have to wait for another turn in the future. This film was great, and I’m wondering if it would have had a better shot if the film wasn’t a Netflix production. Dang.

4. Michael Stuhlbarg- Michael was in three films that were nominated for Best Picture, and didn’t get recognized for any of them. In “The Post,” he was part of an ensemble that helped drive the film. In “The Shape of Water,” he provided a likable character and learned several languages. And in “Call Me By Your Name,” he delivered one of the best, most powerful monologues of the year. It’s a shame he wasn’t represented, but he will be in the future, I bet.

3. Armie Hammer for Supporting Actor- Similar to Michael Stuhlbarg, Hammer was a highlight of “Call Me by Your Name.” But Hammer was a much more prominent role and stole many of the scenes he was in, so I’m shocked he didn’t at least get a nomination. The academy wasn’t as nice to this film as I expected, though it did score a Best Picture, Actor, and writing nomination.

2. “Wonder Woman”- This film wasn’t recognized for anything this year. I’m not necessarily surprised that it was snubbed for Best Picture, but it also wasn’t nominated for any technical awards (including sound, costumes, or visual effects). It was a great film, and I wish it got more attention.

1. LEGO Batman- Where was LEGO Batman? They nominated “The Boss Baby” and “Ferdinand” over “The LEGO Batman Movie.” Possibly the biggest WTF moment of the nomination ceremony.
