Top 10 Tuesdays: Top 10 Worst Films of 2017

Dec 20, 2017 by PowerRankings101
imageThis has been a great year for film, but there have been some pretty big duds as well. So what are the worst of the worst? Feel free to sound off below as well! Spoiler alert: I’m not gonna be too nice on these films.

Honorable Mentions: A Dog’s Purpose, The LEGO Ninjago Movie, Life, Speech & Debate, Song to Song, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure

10. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales- Sigh. Johnny Depp is bored with Jack Sparrow at this point. Even Oscar winner Javier Bardem couldn’t be compelling enough as the bad guy in this one, despite an interesting design. The only actor who seemed into it was Geoffrey Rush, but…well…I’ll leave the spoilers out of this. But I don’t know if you’re gonna watch it anyway. Moving on.

9. Table 19- I was thrilled to see such a cool cast come together for this film. The cast was great, but the plot was just so boring and underwhelming. I cannot remember many details of the story, but I know that I’d rather sit at a different table come 2018.

8. Snatched- Amy Schumer hit a high with her comedy “Trainwreck,” but this film just flopped horrendously. The characters were pretty underwhelming, compared to the hilarious characters of “Trainwreck,” and the whole mother-daughter comedy theme had the potential to be good if it wasn’t masked by a stupid action movie set in the jungle. It was just downright stupid.

7. Fist Fight- A pretty stale comedy. The jokes were fine, but the premise itself just felt like a lazy one, only trying to get some money in the early months of the year. Instead, this bombed at the box office, hopefully proving that stupid ideas won’t fly, even if big name actors are in it. I was overall disappointed, and cannot tell you much of the plot, it was that unmemorable.

6. The Belko Experiment- Blood and guts are fun and cool, but when you go overboard, it just seems like silly subpar filmmaking. This film had the elements to make a good film, but the elements didn’t cohesively come together to garner more than just an eye roll from me.

5. Transformers: The Last Knight- YAY! I’m not saying that because this was good. I’m saying YAY because this is the first Transformers movie to not make the US top 10 box office, which will hopefully give Michael Bay a sign to stop making these horrible movies. They may be guilty pleasures to some, but for me, this is simply trash.

4. Baywatch- Perhaps the most disappointed I’ve been all year. I didn’t expect this to be the next “Citizen Kane,” but I thought it would at least be an enjoyable summer blockbuster flick. Instead, it was a boring, dull film with minimal laugh out loud moments, and stale acting performances.

3. The Emoji Movie- Animation is always good in some way…whoop, I spoke too soon. This movie hit lower lows than I’ve ever seen with animation. If I could use emojis, I’d simply put a poop emoji, but even calling this movie “poop” would be a compliment.

2. Fifty Shades Darker- Hilarious in the worst way. This movie wasn’t intended to be a comedy, but was hilariously bad in so many ways. The plot made no sense at times (ala helicopter), and the chemistry between the two leads was even worse than the first film. But at least this film didn’t involve grown women kissing 12 year olds like our number one choice…

1. The Book of Henry- This movie was problematic in so many ways, but above else in its screenplay. The story is just confusing and uneven as hell. Women kissing children, dead child leading their mother on the path of murdering their neighbor, problematic gun stores, horrible dialogue, and awkward plot lines that go unresolved. This was unfair to such good child talent, as this film was probably the biggest blow of Jacob Tremblay and Jaeden Lieberher’s careers so far. Luckily “Wonder” redeemed Jacob Tremblay’s 2017 and “It” redeemed Jaeden Lieberher’s 2017 as well. It’s a shame that this also ruined Colin Trovorrow’s chances of directing a Star Wars film…but now that this movie happened, we may be thanking the heavens.
