Eurovision 2018 Semi-Final 2 thoughts

My qualifier prediction never drastically changed so I got 8/10 qualifiers right.

This semi-final wasn't as big of a trainwreck as I had imagined, but a lot of people still struggled. My favourite by far was Hungary. I've grown to fall in love with Hungary's song and their performance tonight was so good. I'm hoping for another Top 10 result in the final because they deserve it.

Most of tonight's qualifiers (with the exception of two) were expected. I imagine Sweden won the semi-final. The performance was slick and professional. Ukraine must also have been up there as Melovin was a strong show closer. I think Australia was well received too even though everything about the performance felt off, but it worked? Alexander Rybak fell completely flat for me tonight, but I was expecting him to make it.

The biggest shock for me tonight was Serbia qualifying. I'm really happy about it but I wasn't expecting it at all. Their odds lengthened after they performed, and people had already written them off to begin with. The performance wasn't super engaging either, but I'm glad the song is in.

Slovenia qualifying was probably the biggest pleasant surprise I've experienced in Eurovision. Lea Sirk ROCKED it. I get that some people may have been turned off by the staged technical error but I thought it worked lol. Overall a fun and energetic performance and SUCH A DESERVING FINALIST.

I'm most surprised to see Poland out but the song never did anything for me. I'm most sad about Malta because I thought Christabelle gave a good performance and I would liked to have seen her in the final. I would liked to have seen Latvia qualify as well but I was never expecting Laura to make it.

I knew Russia wasn't going to make it. I feel bad for Julia. While today might have been her best performance (which isn't saying much), it feels like she was set up to fail from the start. Romania was another one I'm not surprised to see out. They tried to lift a dated song with staging, and it had tricked a lot of people into thinking it would qualify but of course, it didn't.
