2. Oculus (rewatch)-So underrated. I’ve seen it twice now and I’m sad it doesn’t have a bigger following than it does. I actually think it’s really clever AND spooky.
3. The Blair Witch Project-I admire its technique, but I don’t think it’s all that scary. Still, I admire Heather Donahue’s performance more and more with every watch. I think she’s great. Don’t understand the Razzie, but then again they nominated Shelley Duvall in The Shining so they’re trash.
4. Halloween-A classic but...I DON’T LOVE IT :’( In retrospect it might have been on my most overrated. I understand it was important for its time, but comparing it to Carrie and honestly it feels way more dated to me. Also, controversial opinion, I think the Dr. Loomis plotline detracts from the film more than it adds anything. I get why it’s a classic, but sometimes I wish Black Christmas had its reputation instead.
5. Shutter-When I think of Asian horror, I wouldn’t think of Thailand, so it’s cool they’re putting themselves on the map. That said, this was just okay. The idea of a vengeful ghost appearing in photographs feels pretty played out to me. I think stronger direction and a better script could have saved it but oh well. Also I was lowkey distracted by how not Thai the lead actor looked, then I learned he’s the son of a famous couple of a white reporter and a Lao woman who fled Laos lol.
You should watch the Film Theory on The Blair Witch Project. It definitely adds a different perspective to the film and makes it a little more creepier :p
