NicoleF Ranks 2020 Albums - #21

Feb 14, 2021 by NicoleF
Since I had so much time in quarantine, I listened to way more projects than usual, 40 to be exact. Most are albums, but there's 2 or 3 EPs in there so I thought it'd be fun to rank them!

#21 is.......Rare - Selena Gomez

Highlights - Likewise with the past couple albums, I went in depth with a lot of the highlights already in my song chart, but I'll speak a bit on them here. Let Me Get Me allows me to live out my Me & My Girls love once again on this album, but it's even better than Me & My Girls. Production is out of this world and Selena's vocals actually sound amazing! Lose You To Love Me was on my rankings for 2019 and deserved to be there! It's a great, super emotional, and vulnerable ballad anthem and I still love it to this day, ESPECIALLY in the final chorus where it's just an audience chanting the lyrics...chills. Dance Again is a fun bop that, well, makes you want to dance! It's infectious and fun and would've blown up if it wasn't for the COVID-19 pandemic. Beyond that, Look At Her Now has grown on me a lot within the past year. I despised it when it came out in 2019, but now I actually love it. Hell, even Ring and Rare are good! Ring has a cool, bad bitch, slightly western, simplistic tone and I love it. Also love all the different ways she uses the word 'ring'. Rare...is a weak single, admittedly, but as time grew on, it grew on me. I find it getting stuck in my head from time to time, but it still isn't out of this world.

Lowlights - I'm honestly devastated that this album didn't hit top half. I didn't listen to the deluxe album that came out later, but I wonder if my opinions on the album would go up if I did because Selena didn't just add additional tracks to the end. No. She straight up changed the entire tracklist order. So I wonder if a new order would make the album feel more cohesive. Plus, if you follow my other series, you know Boyfriend was one of my favorite songs of 2020. On top of that, she adds a lot of her older songs that never placed on an album like Bad Liar and Fetish (both iconic bops and, honestly, some of her best singles) on a Target edition I believe. I don't know, but come to me next year, and I may regret her just missing top half. I mean...if Revival came out in 2020, it'd easily be top 5 of the year so Selena is capable of great things. For the negatives, though, A Sweeter Place feels uninspired and bores me and, honestly, I don't care for or like Kid Cudi's part at all. Fun is just too bubblegum pop goody-two-shoes for me. It's really bad honestly and it's hard to get through it. In the words of the queen AjayII, Fun.......is not fun. People You Know, though, is the worst song. It barely beats out Fun for the title, but it does, and it's a shame cause it features some nice production, but holy fuck whoever wrote it should be fired. It's so simplistic and it reaches a level of repetitiveness that, like.....we need to invent a new word because repetitive is understating it. Like, not even joking, the last 1:50 of the song is either Selena saying multiple "da-dum"s or saying "people can go from people you know to people you don't" for the most part. Production, although cool, doesn't even change for the most part so the last almost 2 minutes of the song is just the same thing on repeat 34682798 times. Ew.
