NicoleF Ranks 2020 Albums - #26

Jan 26, 2021 by NicoleF
Since I had so much time in quarantine, I listened to way more projects than usual, 40 to be exact. Most are albums, but there's 2 or 3 EPs in there so I thought it'd be fun to rank them!

#26 is.......conversations with myself about you - lovelytheband

Highlights - I already talked about both in my 2020 songs rankdown, but emo and loneliness for love are emo 2000s pop nostalgia perfection and literally takes me back to my childhood! Mitchy Collins, the lead singer, just has the perfect voice for the genre that they're in. Whether I love or hate the song they're singing, it's rarely ever his voice that's the issue. It's just such a good throwback nostalgic voice. One thing they do really well in both of these songs is maintain a steady pace. It's a very overlooked value in songs, but so important! I don't want to love the first half and then get bored eventually halfway through. They make sure it starts well and ends well and I'm really appreciative of that! I honestly still can't believe they're mostly undiscovered outside of their one-hit wonder 2016/17(?) hit "broken".

Lowlights - The first track on the album, the title track, is just annoying. Honestly could've put it in a tier lower but I know it's the intro track and it's kind of interlude-ish, so I didn't want to be so harsh. A lot of it is just random people repeating the title of the song, but the lead singer sings in the background and plays some piano, so I counted it as an actual song although I don't know if I should've or not. Still, though, it's a weak track. idwgtyp is the other lowlight and the worst on the album. When I saw this on the tracklist, I thought it was a cool title and was excited, but it's horrible. It's very chaotic production-wise and is just super messy overall and not in the iconic or good way. Also remember how I said the lead vocalist of lovelytheband is rarely ever an issue? Key word: rarely. He doesn't work here at all. His voice is very grating and I actually think he's a little out of tune in the main chorus mostly cause he's really pushing the emo "semi-yell" talk-singing which doesn't work for me and is way too aggressive, especially with the already aggressively chaotic production, which just makes this song super...SUPER aggressive. It's too much for me.
