NicoleF's Top 100 Songs of 2020 - #45-48

Jan 25, 2021 by NicoleF
#48 - For Now - Lauv

This is Lauv's third entry on my year-end rankings. This is his highest placing song so far! Will he be able to beat it later on this year?

I don't know why I like this song so much. It's a very simple song honestly, but it's so effective. The biggest show of this is in the production. Barely any production is put on supporting Lauv's vocals honestly, but it really helps drive the song without it losing pace and then it kind of gets it's moment to shine at the bridge before the beautiful outro. Obviously, though, Lauv's vocals are amazing too, especially at the outro. He really brings me into the lyrics and makes me feel them deeply. Love this song.

#47 - High - Miley Cyrus

This is Miley Cyrus's fifth entry on my year-end rankings. Her highest placement was last year with Mother's Daughter at #11. Will she be able to beat it this year?

Holy fuck Miley had an amazing year as far as I'm concerned for her music career. She finally found the genre in which her voice sounds the best! This ballad, honestly, is one of my favorites ever. It's a little country, it's a little pop, it's a little rock, and it's a lot of perfection! You can seriously feel the hurt and confusion in Miley's voice and holy hell her little rasps in this song work soooo well! This is just such a great, vulnerable track of her opening up about trying to move on from her failed marriage. How she tried her best to say goodbye and she doesn't miss the memories, but she constantly thinks of them and doesn't know why. It's just such a beautiful song and Miley's vocals are amazing!

#46 - Workin On It - Meghan Trainor ft. Lennon Stella & Sasha Sloan

This is Meghan Trainor's third entry on my year-end rankings. Her highest placement was last year with AFTER YOU at #36. Will she be able to beat it this year? Meanwhile, this is Lennon Stella's first entry on my year-end rankings. Will she have more entries later? We'll see! Lastly, this is Sasha Sloan's first entry on my year-end rankings. Will she have more entries later? We'll see!

It is devastating that Meghan's, like, fallen of the charts and mainstream cause I firmly believe that some of the music she released this past year are some of her best yet. I know she blew up for the quirky, ott-ness of All About That Bass, Lips Are Movin, Me Too, etc, but like...this girl can hit you in the emotions! She has such pretty vocals when everything's stripped back! The song's message is beautiful about working on self-confidence, something everyone struggles with, and the vocals are stunning on all three ladies' parts. My favorite part though is "tryna see what you see when you look at me" not only cause it's a mood (and kind of similar to the pov chorus for Ariana), but because holy hell I don't know musical terms the best but Meghan goes up into her head voice(???) I think and it sounds soooooooooooo beautiful. Like it's a little area of the chorus but it's like the production fades to the back for that line everytime so it can be highlighted and it's so beautiful! Her acoustic live version of this song is stunning too! Excited for what Meghan will give to us in 2021!

#45 - Midnight Sky - Miley Cyrus

This is Miley Cyrus's sixth entry on my year-end rankings. Her highest placement was last year with Mother's Daughter at #11. Will she be able to beat it this year?

This song deserved so much better in the mainstream. Is the mainstream really going to "Katy" Miley by making all future projects flop post-blonde short hair kinda crazy phase!? It's putrid! This song deserved so much better and her and her label promoted the fuck out of it, so to see it flop was devastating. I guess the #14 peak isn't too bad and it became a smash hit in the UK randomly, but still it's so sad. Like...this single is honestly one of Miley's best singles ever! Like I said in 'High', she finally found the perfect genre for her voice and she shows it off here! It flows beautifully, she sounds beautifully, and it has amazing production! Also the remix with Stevie is pretty good too! Miley snappedt with this song and the public should be ashamed for streaming trash like woman abuser Chris Brown's Go Crazy more than this...
