New's Movie Taste - ROUND 4 (RESULTS)

Nov 28, 2021 by NewNightmare7
Hello and welcome to the results show!

We love having like half of this round be T's! As the competition gets tighter, the rounds get harder and while I might see some films as subjectively a better movie, most of my interest and eliminations come from how much I personally enjoy and find it entertaining <3

With that said, lets get to the critiques! The following are SAFE:

oswordo3 - Jennifer's Body (2009) - For all the shit that the marketing fucked up with this movie, I'm glad that Roger Ebert of all people enjoyed this movie. He gets it. This movie is just alot of fun and I love how bizarre it is. The two female leads completely kill their roles and I really like how this movie is the opposite of what alot of horror has to offer. Thats all I really have to say cause im pretty tired.

nateclove - Ju-On: The Grudge (2002) - I love japaneese films! Granted i've only seen 3 including this one (Battle Royale & Audition) but I really wanna invest myself more into them because they are so raw and its fun! This movie is no different. Its hard to talk about stuff like this cause I have no knowledge of the culture but I appreciate the art and the use of subtle creepiness rather than in your face intensity. I also appreciate how despite being the third one in the series, it can stand on it's own with evnough context of the previous films. I also love the way Japaneese movies set up the shots. It feels offputting and ifs great! I wonder if the american version is beat for beat. Anyways, while I appreciate the art form, I do find the pace to be a little slow but to me thats normal in haunted movies which aren't particarily my thing but nevertheless, I enjoyed it!

tbrown_47 - Toy Story (1995) - I mean its a classic! I absolutely adore Pixar films. I grew up on them and appreciate the talent to making really cool stories and wonderfully developed characters. This is clearly no exception. The movie that changed animation, it has a right to be beloved. While I do love this movie, it isn't my favourite one in the series (that belongs to Toy Story 3) and yes the obvious negative is the animation is aging. While not as bad as A Bug's Life, it's pretty noticeable. The difference between the two though is the story and characters absolutely shine. Ive always found Woody's insecurities relatable and I love Tom Hanks. Points are being knocked off for a bit of an obvious choice. Still, a classic

PennyTrationStan - Thirteen (2003) - Can I just say that I love Sarah Clarke! She is the best in 24. I love her. I also love Holly Hunter. Anyways, this movie made me feel extremely uncomfortable, in arguably the best way. I would compare this to Uncut Gems but where as Uncut Gems has me irritated, this movie has me invested. The fact that Nikki Reed co-wrote this at 14 is astounding. I like the way this movie was shot. It feels very gorilla style, kind of almost documentary like and I really enjoy it cause it helps with the spiralling of Tracy. Another heavy hitter that I really enjoy but like Mysterious Skin, I don't thunk I could ever revisit it just cause its such a hard movie to watch. Doesn't really negatively affect it though.

Congrats on making it to week 5! Now onto my top 3!:

turkeylover - The Strangers (2008) - I absolutely adore this movie. Its such a barebones film but thats why I love it. Its raw and its not trying to glamourize what is happening. Bryan Bertino directs the hell out of this movie and Liv Tyler is such a stand out. I love the dynamic of a couple struggling in their relationship as a set up. Its a way of stating "this movie isn't happy and im not gonna let you think it is". I've heard complaints that its pretty slow paced and while I do agree for the small runtime, it feels slow, Im ok with it because its building subtle tension. I don't need to have everything constantly in my face and when it does happen I appreciate it more as its justified. One of my favourites of the past 21 years.

Symmetry888 - Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) - For the record, my brother watched this with me and insisted we watch it in english dub but I love Kirsten Dunst so its fine.  Also can I just say Phil Hartman did not deserve to die like that  its such a tragedy and im really sad everytime I see his name in anything. RIP a legend. Anyways, this movie is so wholesome! I really enjoyed this. The music and the animation are so beautiful and its such a simple story but conveyed so well. Jiji is my favourite. He reminds me of my own cat. I don't really know much else to say but I have to say this is just so great. Also, this was my first ever anime film (and Studio Ghibli) and man I have been missing out.

Becksta20 - Remember the Titans (2000) - Watching this movie made me so depressed at what time was like. People are just genuinely awful and its so sad to see it but this movie is without a doubt uplifting and I really enjoyed this. Its hard to talk about it cause I cannot relate to the experience this was for alot of people (even still today) but I can say that its always nice to put everything into perspective and I love that as the theme of this movie. As someone who works with kids I would love to show them this movie and help teach them perspective. Also I love Hayden Panettiere. I am without a doubt not a sports fan either, especially football. Being canadian its always been hockey and stuff but I have to say all that stuff was very entertaining to see. Great pick!

And the winner of Week 4 is.....

turkeylover! For the 2nd week in a row you continue to shine bright like Ms. Dollface's hair. Congrats!

Symmetry888 and Becksta20 will recieve HIGH placements

And onto our BOTTOM 2 :(

Jaxon - Tamara (2005) - Oh man. I did not care for this movie. While some of the gore scenes are great and Jenna Dewan is pretty good in the role, I have so many issues with the movie. First off, the set-up is basically Carrie/I Know What You Did Last Summer and both movies are more successful. I also would compare this to Jennifer's Body despite that coming out later. Another issue is the logic. I do not believe a school would continue to stay open after a kid kills themself on a live video feed. Thats just one of many, I could forgive the movie if it was a more cheeky self aware type trashy thing but this movie takes itself so seriously that it comes off very shallow. At least with Jennifer's Body it knows what it's doing. I wish I could have enjoyed this more but I just didn't get the appeal.

tyleror - This is 40 (2012) - Well this movie spoiled Lost for me...that sucked. This movie also is not good. I did not smile or laugh once (well thats not true the glee joke was interesting). I am not a Judd Apatow fan. I find his comedic style too crude and no substance to back it up and it is full force here. There are only so many sex jokes that can be done before it gets dull and it got dull in the first scene.

And the eliminated contestant is...

tyleror :( i'm sorry man. I appreciate the effort but it just came up short this round. Thank you so much for playing <3

Jaxon will recieve a LOW placement.

Good job on making it to the final 8! The competition is fierce and will continue to be so! Stay tuned!

tyleror I know and in theory its nice but in execution its very poor because these people just aren't good people and the proof (at least for me) is in the jokes :(
